Daniel Craig has a least two film comitments even if Bond 23 gets on track.

Essentially, Dalton was slated for three films, but his contract expired. I think the primary difference here, though, is that Dalton was probably more than happy to have an opportunity to bail and took it.
It seems that these days, an actor's commitment is actually pretty small in regard to time as compared to the entire film project. Craig could probably stack up a few films and not have it interfere with Bond too much.
Film actors can be hopping from movie project to another in next to no time. OK the Bond's are big commitments with the stunt work, fight sequences and other "specialist" activities the character is seen doing in the script, and the key actors have to be available for a percentage of that work. However, the overall filming period in itself is small scale to the production period. - The contracts, budgeting, production design and construction, licensing, etc.
Perhaps Sir Michael Caine is the best example. That man has a film career behind him most actors are envious of, because he was / is constantly working! Whether Mr Craig has one or two, or potentially 12 films / projects on the go between now and the next Bond is irrelevant. Its all in the scheduling.
I could be wrong, but I think in Mr Dalton's case his commitment to Bond was getting in the way of other things. - Stage work for a start. No doubt if there was the possibility he could not commit to certain productions due to the risk the Bond film would sort themselves out. - I am guessing here, Mr Craig does not seem to have that issue at all.
This is also where agents and personal managers step in. They in part are responsible for helping actors juggle their schedule to follow the best and most profitable / practical pieces of work. After all the agent's livelihood depends on it too.
The papers are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find new ways of sensationalising the Bond / MGM stopping block! I wish Stargate was getting this level of media attention!
Seriously kidding.
Agreed. A 'win' for everybody. Hopefully these projects are well received; certainly can't hurt interest in Bond when he's finally extracted from the financial deep-freeze

These new films may not work, denting Craig's box office appeal. Generally, time may move on and Craig may loose his momentum. BTW I'm slightly of the view that Dalton got pushed.

Seems after Craig's settled into his Bond status, he's been making more good choices than bad (the Broadway show with Jackman was a nice turn as well ) plus is highly sought after. Doesn't suck and by the time his Bond tenure ends he may well end as the most successful/best reviewed Bond actor while in the role (Connery came into his own in the decades post-Bond IMO).
Agreed. It seems he is looking at the big picture (no pun intended) - his long term career. Bond is the only mainstream franchise he has embraced because its made him a name, and gives him more scope to purse things he wants to do. - He's the first Bond actor I actively want to see in other films (past work and future projects) because of that. Plus he keeps his toes in the theatre pond too.
For any actor the next project is a risk. But either a sucess or a fail, they can;t depend on one franchise. Mr Craig knows that. Bit worried about Cowboys and Aliens though. Firefly tried the Western in Space vibe, and it got shot to hell, even if the film Serenity did do well!
