What's the average mount of money you spend for..

MANDY1MANDY1 TISPosts: 2,608MI6 Agent
...collecting Bond stuff or items or maybe for getting materials to get a prop/props done

or living Bond lifestyle in a period of one year? or in a month?

I'm just curious to know, but to be honest my wife made that question

to me yesterday and i didn't know what to say, i just tried very poorly change the subject :s

I'm not gonna tell you how the conversation continued...

i guess you people would already know the answer :D

Well, just posted this topic to let the big audience to speak for itself........and for me :))

I'll start to compare my paychecks to my visa bills... ;)

To be honest I don't know what I have spent on props, that way I don't worry about it :s but my Wife is quite understanding about my sickness :D

    Thanks Pete,

sounds like a good idea to remind my Mrs. about her shoe collection :D

Well, my wife is also pretty understanding what comes to my Bond-a-holism

and even sometimes supports me....not in financial way :))

Few weeks ago, my wifes old friend paid a visit to our place with her husband and we had dinner together. After that we had some nice little conversation in the living room, suddenly the husband pointed the CR Flashlight bomb next to P99 with vega holster etc. And asked why on earth i keep a tiny flashlight hanging on a display? Is it some sort of limited special edition? I was like.....in a certain way yes and for me yes. Eh, have you seen Casino Royale? Yes, he answered. Was it a bond film or something he continued?

I continued telling him from which part of movie it was and special friend from states made it for me and he was just like...

oh dear god you have mini casino in a glass cabinet, is that gun real, he asked? Nope, it's Blank.

This is my hobby, my passion (amongst others)...i'm a collector...a Bond-a-holic (I raised my voice a little).

Well, after that little scenario, evening went quite well after all...:)) But it was quite a challenge to "explain" and

    demonstrate things to someone who has not got a single clue, what i was talking about. You know, this is from that movie and that's from this scene....oh and there a many things here that you can see on a big screen only a split second -{

Next time, when some "stranger" pays a visit, i'll have to make sure that i have Candid camera ready for recording

and then i'll have to add english subtitles on it and get it on youtube :D

It varies... In a really modest month it could be about $50,- , but sometimes the floodgates open all at once X-(. This means rare items on eBay, new books on Amazon and rare items from dealers. At the end of which I'll have parted with $ 500,- to $600,-

If you've got the money to spend, then you can spend it how you like. If you were going into debt, then that's when it gets too much.

But according to other standards, how much is too much? I'd say that if you're getting some sensuous pleasure from your purchases, if you'd like them even if they had zilch to do with Bond, then okay, fine.... If they make you relax when you see them, cool. However, if like some collectors you're just ticking the boxes out of some neurotic compulsion, then imo it's no good at all.

It's like, the Aston Martin DB5 gunmetal grey now at auction. Yeah, I'd be up for that if I had the money! Or would I? I mean, you couldn't drive it every day, it's an insurance risk. But even so, it's a great car and obviously not cheap.

Then you have a Beatles mono vinyl of Rubber Soul for, say, £80. Now, if that's my fave album and I play it every other day, then to my mind I'd have recouped my outlay in a few weeks' time. But if it's just there, and I have it, but I'm not enjoying it, then to my mind it's a waste of cash, even if I can technically afford it.

My wife has always been very good about the Bond hobby aspects. Firstly, it has taken her to many locations and countries and events that have become very special to us. secondly, it has made us some dear and close friends. Notice I didn't mention once about the aspect of the expense. She knows quite well that the family comes first, second and third, and Bond collecting and expenses are a very distant TENTH. People on here only know me, for the most part, for my podcasts an collections but truly the Bond part of my life is a small percentage of my time.

When we have people over I have always been met with very positive reviews of the collection. It is displayed in a tasteful (opinion) way and I usually say something self depricating before we tour it...like, you're gonna' need a drink for this...or, down into the bowells of hell we go. I have even had some clients bring their families by because their love of Bond! The one thing you mustn't do is apologize for it or act sheepish. An analogy to watching a Sunday filled with football for 6 hours, or hitting a little white ball with a club might do the trick...

As far as expenditure, I think someone mentioned that was a personal bit of info---and I agree. BUT, it's all in proportion too. The one point that should not be ignored is if one is spending beyond their means or is doing without because of a Bond nicknak or article of clothing.

BTW, I find I spend a lot less the farther we get away from a premiere of a Bond movie...;)

its pretty simple for me, i'm skint so if i want a prop i usually make it for myself, i also find it enjoyable working out how to make stuff etc, so its all part of the hobby for me, not just collecting but designing, producing etc.

the only stuff i buy is stuff i can't do myself, like paperwork etc, camille's driving licence being an example.

so in answer to your question mr teppo, bugger all really B-)

my collection is nowhere near as impressive as alot of the members here are because college eats up most of my funds, but when the money is available it can go just as quickly as it came. it doesnt help that my particlular hobby can be quite ridiculously expensive (collecting screen-used props from my favorite films) but in the end i think its worth it as NP pointed out because they do make me happy everytime i walk in and see them and its great when people are over and ask about the props. so in the end ill just say the money doesnt matter as long as the purchases give you some form of happiness or enjoyment.

I dont think I spend as much as some, and I'm not trying to get everything associated with 007 but a few peices that are for lack of a better word, nostalgic for me. the GG is something that I thought was cool when I was a kid and saw it for the first time on HBO. Some other things that I have are for the same reasons, if there was a prop from a movie that I liked or thought was cool I might be persuaded to purchase one and display it. And as I'm sure most of you are the same I dont limit myself to Bond, I have some varying interests.
the one thing I truly enjoy about this forum is seeing some of the talented people displaying their homemade stuff and they look amazing, the detail, and the craftsmanship make me envious of their talent.

I suppose like all interests/obsessions, it comes down to whether it opens up your interest in other things, or closes it off. And also how much sensuous, uplifting enjoyment you get from it, as opposed to scratching an itch.

There's a greedy impulse one gets - and I speak for myself - which tempts fate to frustrate you when you acquire a purchase, like if it arrives and it's a bit scratched, normally hardly noticeable but can be a wind-up. I bought some old-style book club editions of the Blofeld trilogy. It started off with OHMSS which really is a great cover, but one corner was nicked and not in the picture, I got another but the spine was a bit yellow. Then I got the collector bug and got the other ones: TB, YOLT and TMWGG. All looked good but I had it in mind for some rainy bourgouis day when they would be on display in a nice old bookcase.... :) Thing is, they've been on the shelf since then and I've honestly never looked at them. :o They may as well not exist.

Here it's not the money that's important - I got them all for maybe £25 total, but you know, the arguably bad spirit behind it...

Usually I try to stay around $25-30.00 money wise. About the most I ever spent on a Bond related item was $50 for Desmond Llewellyn's biography as SpyGuise was only selling a limited amount, and the advertisement they sent out helped to convince me it would be a excellent edition to my collection.

Also being a college student has made me be more selective when it comes to my collecting. Another factor is that unlike before their is very little new stuff being made that has gotten my interest. Dare I say it but I think over the last year and a half I have only purchased maybe seven or eight items Bond related.
