Knitted Silk Ties - Connery Era

Hi All

While these are not particualry hard to find in a number of shops or online I thought I'd share my recent purchases with you all and make a recommendation.

Last week I ordered two silk knitted ties from Michelson's of London - very similar to those worn by Connery in a number of his Bond movies. I ordered one in black and the other in navy and I have to say both the quality of the ties and the speed of the service was excellent. Sadly they did send me the larger 8cm wide ties rather than the 6cm which I ordered but they quickly apologised and immediately rectified the problem sending the correct ties to me over night.

If you live in the UK (not sure if they ship abroad) and want one of these style ties you won't go far wrong with them - and they are only £15 each!

Another one to add to the list of UK shops which sells knitted ties is T M Lewin, a bit more more expensive than Michelsons but another option. They have a web shop and retail outlets, not sure about international postage. I haven't actually bought one of these yet, but have handled one in the shop and the quality is good...but then I am no expert. I have always fancied a knitted tie, but have been too worried about catching it on 'things'...but at £15 from Michelsons maybe I will give it a go.

    Dryden: How did he die?
James Bond: Your contact? Not well.
Dryden: Made you feel it, did he? Well, you needn't worry. The second is...
    James Bond: Yes... considerably.

I did consider getting them from T M Lewin but thought £59 was a bot over the top pricewise for such ties. That said they are having a sale at the moment with them now down to £27. The Michelson's ones really are very good - can't go wrong at £15.

For those in the US I would recommend checking TJ Maxx, there are usually a few Ralph Lauren Polo knitted ties in random colors.

There's a reason those ties are so cheap, nms! Someone seems to have taken a pair of scissors to the ends of them! :#

Are you sure they're not just rolled-up socks? ?:)

:D Joking aside, what Connery films were they in? Dr No? Do you know what colours? I may order one, though knowing my luck while I ponder it, they'll raise the price.

Connery's Bond wears knitted ties essentially in Goldfinger:

colors are: black, navy and dk.beige/lt.brown

Although some of Connery's ties in Dr. No, FRWL and Thunderball look like knitted ties, they are actually basketweave solid silk ties.

Lazenby's Bond also wore silk knitted ties in OHMSS (black or navy) as did Brosnan briefly in TWINE (black).

To get something accurate, you need to find the silk loose knit kind...

Thanks! Not sure where to find the silk loose knit type, nms' suggestion will suffice! :)

Do you know what scenes they were in?

KJ Beckett's are a pretty accurate modern version at a great price and they ship worldwide:

    http://www.kjbeckett.com/acatalog/silkties_p3.html

    As far are scenes go:

    - M's office: black
    - Q's shop: black (could also be navy)
    - Alpine drive: dk.beige/lt.brown
    - Golfinger's lair: navy
    - Fort Knox: black
    - Plane ending scene: black

    Cheers!

Does anyone know how accurate the knitted ties from Magnoli are? I have the one he produced in black but it is sadly made of polyester rather than silk. The Michelson's ties are pretty identical to the Magnoli one except the fact its made of silk.

Failing that I might try the socks idea :))

As written before, the KJ Beckett's are a pretty accurate modern loose knit silk version. I own 2 of those and they are just perfect and the £29.95 price tag makes them even more attractive...

Interestingly KJ Beckett are also selling some Michelson's knitted silk ties for £25 - that's £10 more than direct from Michelson's! :s

I don't doubt saint-antoine's authority on this, but I have to say I actually prefer the Michelson ones, even if they may not look as accurate as the ones in the films. I don't really like the loose knit silk version, they don't look very cool to me.

Most interesting. The Michelson's knit ties don't look loose knit from the pics but at £15 they are obviously an alternative that is worth a try. If someone knows about the Michelson's ties please tell us. As for myself, I recommend Beckett's without hesitation... after all a good quality black knit silk tie is that one piece of clothing should be in every man's wardrobe...

Irrespective of which versions look most like Bond's in GF or TB, any opinions on which versions look naff and which don't? I'm not an authority on taste or fashion.

The Tie Bar now has silk knit ties and from my experience their products are excellent. Unfortunately the navy is sold out already but black and brown are still available. I just ordered last night. I have several of their ties and I'll probably never buy a tie from anywhere else--at $15 the value is outstanding. I hope they continue the knit line.

I ordered a black Michelson tie yesterday, it arrived first class this morning, that's service for you.

BTW the silk tie isn't as opaque as it looks on the picture, it's more thready, a bit like on the KJ Beckett...

Can anyone suggest a nice white shirt to go with that tie?

It doesn't seem to quite fit my shirt which in any case is not very suave anyhow.

Should go well with a decent quality cotton shirt with cutaway collars and doublecuffs. If you want to really Bond-like why not try one with a cocktail cuff - Marks and Spencer do these if you look under their made-to-measure section.

    what's a cocktail cuff?
  • saint-antoinesaint-antoine CanadaPosts: 209MI6 Agent
    what's a cocktail cuff?

It is a turnback type of cuffs that was designed by Turnbull & Asser for the Bond character in all the early films up to TMWTGG. In short: like spread french cuffs closed by 2 buttons instead of cufflinks...

I think Moore is seen wearing one in The Spy Who Loved Me, at Fekish's club and thereafter. It's perhaps a bit OTT for my "image"... :#
