Thanks, this is useful stuff. Hi, M5, I wondered what had happened to you of late... :)

Yes, it was 12.4km/hr then up to 14km/hr alternating per minute for 20 minutes, on an incline! Followed by 20 mins on the cross trainer again going hard and fast, alternating. I thought it would be churlish not to try it as that was recommended but I did kind of figure that it wasn't quite what I'd been advised at another gym, then again I thought if this is 40 mins in all, well, I thought my previous failing was that I'd only gone hard for just 20 mins or so, whereas if I did it longer, by then I'd be in the fat buring zone.

Of course, you're not supposed to touch the handles when running, but certainly the heart rate is around 160, that's not good is it? Things is, I get stubborn and stick to these routines, that said I couldn't sustain the running machine for much, I only did it for 10 mins or so.

I do steam room and sauna too, that gets the heart rate up.

Lexi, a lot of what you say is in the Waist Disposal book, which I have only done for a week or so... Will let you know how it goes but it doesn't advocate too strenuous exercise.

Edit: Some decent tips in today's Times, eat more protein in the winter months with a salad, eat in front of a mirror to keep tabs on yourself, don't dim the lights as you only eat more (the reason many restaurants do this...)

Nap - I eat like a horse, albeit a carnivorous horse but my knee is all right now, so I'll try to get some exercise tomorrow. The point is, I've gained a whole stone and a half in what was a short time off exercise. You simply need to do what Lexi says and consume less than you burn, and largely it doesn't matter what you do, just how fast it will work. I read somewhere that Stephen Fry lost 3 stone by walking while listening to novel adaptations on his ipod. It's all so easy to talk about it - I've got work to do of my own now... :#

The best way to lose fat is interval training: go for relatively short, strenuous bursts of cardio with recovery in between. A good example is on an exercise bike do 30 seconds as fast as you can go followed by 60-90 seconds of slow cycling. repeat this at least 4 or 5 times, and do 3 sets. This is particularly good as you will continue burning calories for hours afterwards, whereas with one long, constant period of cardio you will only burn calories whilst training and your body will store fat in response.

I find this interesting. I need to lose weight myself and have started to ride my bike again. I did this back in 2008 and was somewhat successful. I lost 15 pounds in 3 months. I had to change my diet some, but not much. Smaller lunches and I cut out the beer completely. I gained it all back though.

I started to ride my bike again this past Sunday. I only ride about 3 to 5 miles for now, but most of the time I'm peddling the whole time, keeping a constant speed of 13 to 15 miles per hour. I cut out the beer to. If I can keep it up through the winter I'll update sometime in January. I weighed myself Saturday. I weighed in at 261 pounds. If I keep it up, I'll see where I'm at in mid-January.

Yeah, but that's what the gym has advised me and it really doesn't work. Not for me anyway, see my thread above. To do this for 20 minutes really just knackers me out and I end up eating more to compensate. Mind you, when you say do three sets, does that mean in one go? Or spread out a bit. In any event its no less than 20 mins in total doing this, pretty knackering I find.

The truth is Nap, that loads of different things work, and they work differently for different people. I never really noticed my wife getting the baby weight off after our second child, but the other day when she got out of the bed I thought "Holy sh*t she's looking good!" And then I thought about all the times she said no to dessert, or had toast whilst I was frying egg and bacon, or didn't have more than a couple of chocolates while I finished the box. The truth is, she hasn't exercised at all, changed only a few things and dropped a good stone in about 10 weeks. She even admits that she's forgotten she's on a diet of sorts. It's easy to say, but you really do only have to change a few things and let time do the rest. Now, all I have to do is take my own advice... :#

Yeah, sounds like there'll be another kid on the way if your wife isn't careful! :))
