Need some help: Novels vs. Short Stories

I just finished reading "Casino Royale", and will soon be moving on to "Live and Let Die". I noticed that "For Your Eyes Only" and "Octopussy and the Living Daylights" are compilations of short stories. Do these follow the plot of the previous novels, or are they completely separate? For example, "For Your Eyes Only" was published in 1960, preceded by "Goldfinger" in 1959. Do the short stories in "For Your Eyes Only" pick up where "Goldfinger" left off?
Thank you!
I've always liked the James Bond movies and videogames, but I never read the books. I really liked "Casino Royale" and I'm looking forward to reading the others.
