I find it strange that in a way I agree with Both Blueman & Ricardo.C OHMSS is my Favorite Bond Film as is, I like Lazenby and think he gave Bond a more human touch. But with QOS I too think its the worst Bond film made yet (thats including NSNA).
My point (badly made, as always) is that OHMSS being a huge flop is a myth it made a huge Box Office, yet is alwas put down as a failure, yet with QOS a new myth is Borne (J Bourne) that it was a huge hit but the formular for money spent to money made is much smaller even less than LTK. Simply for QOS to equal even half the success of OHMSS it would of needed to make $1,150m 0r £2,300m to equal it.
Showbusiness is just that (bums on seats) Eon forgot that with QOS and let the budget get out of hand, QOS would never make that kind of money.Even with a slimmed down Connery,3d and all the Bond girls Naked in the opening titles. But thats what happens when you let your leading actor and Director throw out one script and work on their own, each adding a little of their own agendas to it. Still I don't want to get into an argument over it,It's just my worthless opinion. As with all of us here I just hope they do a better job with the next one. :)
Does that mean The Dark Knight had a poor showing at the BO? Because I'm sure it too didn't match OHMSS's cost/profit ratio (maybe not even LTK's).

Not liking QOS is one thing, but c'mon now, for current cinema trends at the BO and budgets, it did very well and comparable to other current BO actiony hits.

Latest on The Avengers movie: the producers are "slashing" the budget, so they will be filming it in LA with CGI cityscapes added in to create "New York" (ala what a lot of TV shows do). Makes sense (don't think they're scared at all), with all them superheros the seats will get filled even with fake skylines in the background. Anybody want to see a Bond film where Bond doesn't visit anywhere but a Burbank soundstage? I'm sure like all producers, EON wants to get their product out at a reasonable cost, but location shooting these days is only getting more and more expensive (although product placement revenue seems to be keeping stride).

I take all your points on board Blueman, The dark night did very well cost $185m to make made $1,002m so it turned a nice buck. But I thinks it was crazy to spend the Budget for Two Bond Films on one movie,Sure QOS did very well.I'm not slamming the movie as such Just Defending OHMSS Which I love and tend to jump to it's defence.

Well, the trailer for Cowboys and Aliens is up.

    http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1950390553/

Hopefully won't be too Wild Wild West but I'm not sure the steampunk thing ever quite works in movies, it has a bad track record.

I should be taking weight loss tips from Craig! :o

I know this thread isn't about Cowboys and Aliens, but since you posted the trailer I thought I would comment. I didn't get a "I have to see this movie" feel from what I saw. The opening is poorly edited as you didn't get a real good feel for how Craig overcomes the three strangers, just some quick edits which takes away from that"wow that was cool" effect. Craig does make for a good dusty trails bad guy and Harrison Ford looks fine in his role. Lots of big names associated with this picture, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Ford, but not sure it will be a big hit in the crowded summer field.

I agree Barry - I don't get the 'must see' this film vibe either (although I have to say, cowboy/western films are one of my least fav genre of movies.... aliens are okay.... but the two together? Really?) I guess it's much more geared towards 'bloke movie' - plus the draw of Harrison Ford - and the chemistry between him and Craig, could prove to be the biggest asset this movie has.

As one of DC's biggest fans, it's probably one of his movies I won't go and see at the cinema..... and wait for it to go on sale on play :))

(Not liking the slimmer Craig either - makes him look a lot older - although I LOVE the films poster - Craig has one gorgeous arse :x ;) )

I don't get the griping about Cowboys & Aliens. No, it doesn't look like a ground-breaking cultural event, but it looks fun. That's what I'm looking for in most summer movies I go to; if it delivers, I'll be happy.

Unless EON decides to go with CG "exotic locations," I'm guessing Bond costs will stay around that amount. (And I love OHMSS too!)

They keep spending money like crazy and I don't think they'll hold back for the upcoming film.

Big OHMSS fan here as well. The one consistent thing about Eon, IMO, has been that you generally see exactly where the money went: great locations and good production value. Those panoramic shots of Piz Gloria are a prime example :007)

I don't know what these writers and producers are thinking these days!

I love Westerns and Sci-Fi but IMO this has DISASTER written all over it! The preview looks ridiculous. Just my opinion... It may do some business opening weekend but I predict a critical disaster.

What's wrong with just a western with Ford and Craig? Get a good script and Eastwood or someone capable to direct and you have a hit!

I am constantly amazed that Harrison Ford can't pick a script to save his life over the last number of years. People only want to see him in certain types of roles and he keeps trying to do something new.

His new romantic comedy was panned as well. That recent Indiana Jones movie was a travesty. I guess he lied when he said he wasn't into the whole aliens thing because here comes another winner! :s

On a different note - NSNA isn't even in the same ballpark as QoS! Even if you didn't like QoS, how on earth can anyone think that it's equal to or worse than NSNA??? ?:)

To each his or her own! {[]

They are both bottom of the barrel IMO but Quantum wins for me because even though it's painful at least it's short.

    Ha! I like that:

    "At least it's short!" ;)

That's one of the things I really liked about it - it didn't drag on like a lot of the other films.

I had just gotten back from England from a late flight in November of 1995 when I saw Goldeneye and fell asleep for a moment during the "run-of-the-mill, never-ending Bond finale!" :))

I thought it was pretty well done. I don't like Goldeneye but I'll concede that the movie was pretty tightly written. Then again turning back to Never Say Never Again, it's just so damn boring. The score, the script, the actors, everything in NSNA just seems so tired. I also wouldn't be surprised if NSNA had more dialogue than any other Bond film. I don't think I've ever seen a Bond as talky as that one. Out of the rare times I feel like watching NSNA, I usually turn it off right after the shrublands scenes or before then.

Talking about NSNA - Ugh, that soundtrack!! I can't believe they screwed up and didn't use Phyllis Hyman's song - so much better!

We were talking about the score recently here.

I also agree that the original song was much better. Lani Hall's song just added to the dullness of the opening credits.
  • Red IndianRed Indian BostonPosts: 427MI6 Agent
Agreed! As a kid back then, I was happy to see anything with Bond in it but it certainly doesn't hold up.

With that music it was like a bad tv show!

I think they should just crack on and release bond 23 asap whilst Craig is still popular in the role. I sometimes worry that there may be a big gap until bond 23, and as a result, the heat will die down with Craig being bond, and he will be replaced by a new bond to get the franchise generating interest again. (Basically, a Brosnan replacing Dalton situation).
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

If things had gone the way they should have we would all be talking about the newest film right now! :v

I fear that you may be right about Craig being replaced when the next film does finally come out. His plate keeps getting fuller and fuller... IMO it is looking more and more like Craig's tenure is nothing more than a two-part story.

At least we got to see him get some closure at the end of QoS! ;)

This is why EON has been pushing the video games. They know that have to keep that image of Craig as Bond among a younger audience.

Whoa guys. I realize things have been more than a bit dicey this past year with all the MGM nonsense and all the anxiety it has caused for all us loyal Bond fans. We should all take a deep sigh of relief because Bond 23 will be out in 2012 (just one year later than originally planned) and DC will be back as Bond. As has been stated before, "Cowboys & Aliens" is done, "Girl With The Dragon Tatoo" should be wrapped up very soon and re-shoots for "Dream House" won't take long. After that , it's time for "Bond, James Bond". The general public will not say "Daniel who?" when 23 comes out. This is not 1989 and LTK. EON will promote the hell out of Bond 23 and not allow it tobe overshadowed in the summer action blockbuster market. Also the fact that Craig will have been in at least three high profile films prior to 23's release will keep him in the public eye no matter how well those film's are received critically or at the boxoffice. What I worry about is that EON will return to the quality of CR and continue to allow the evolution of DC's Bond to that magic level of blunt instrument, cunning agent, sardonic humour, violence and exotic adventure that makes a great Bond film.

I predict Craig will do at least one more after #23...after that, all bets are off.

EON still has to have Craig as Bond in the public light as much as they can no matter what. They can't just sit on their hands. Sure, even if they didn't have the video games out right now the public will no doubt remember Craig. However, that dosen't mean their enthuaism will be just as high as when Casino Royale was released. Like I have said before, Bond films have been doing good as of late but they aren't taking in the money or bringing in the audience attendance of todays comic books films. Lastly, I can't see a negative impact if any of Craig's upcoming films fail but it would help a lot if they made a lot of money.

Sometimes a bit of a hiatus can be a good thing. By the time Bond 23 is released in 2012 the general public may be looking for an alternative to the deluge of comic book superhero films that are scheduled for release over the next year or so. A new Bond film may prove to be a welcome change of pace from the latest flying men in tights film...sort of like an old beloved friend returning.
  • Red IndianRed Indian BostonPosts: 427MI6 Agent
I certainly hope so, but I'll feel a lot better when principal photography begins!

While we're waiting, how about Tarantino or someone else directs Brosnan for some sort of alternate Bond film like the NSNA - Octopussy scenario? ;)

That's sort of wishful thinking. Bond at this day and age just can't generate that kind of interest anymore. They have to keep Bond in the public view as much as possible without over doing it.

In general, I really think EON sort helped and hurt Bond by making so many films. They would have benefited by retiring this series for possibly years at a time while they produced other films.

Brosnan is too old just like Connery and Moore were too old. Also no one but EON has the right to a Bond films so isn't going to happen.

I should have been more specific. I'd like to see Brosnan play a spy/assassin in some sort of film that might have some nods to Bond. He was stellar in "The Tailor of Panama" and "The Matador." I just thought it would be fun to see him play another part along those lines!

I also thought he was great in "The Ghost Writer." :)

On an Eon sanctioned note (although it will never happen but I'd pay to see it) I think it would be interesting to see Bond right after he leaves active duty. Perhaps he lives on a simple but gorgeous property on the North Coast of Jamaica... ;)

Maybe he occassionally gets involved in helping out old friends/allies...settling old scores using his assassination skills? ;)

The Cat who posts on this board has expressed doubt that Hyman's song was ever a contender or had even been written by then. He's a bit cryptic about it, though.

I think what would be up PB's alley is starring in a feature film adaptation of Brian Garfield's Hopscotch.

I remember the original film with Walter Matthau; it was more of a comedy whereas the novel was cynical and darker, which IMO would play better to Brosnan's strengths.

IMDB has him listed for pre-production on "St. Vincent" which has the following description:

"Hitman Vincent Novena goes deep undercover portraying a priest in an attempt to get close to his target, a gangland traitor."

Exactly. I read the novel and I think it would be ideal if Brosnan played Kendig. I wonder why Brian decided to take such a dramatic shift in tone with his own work when he wrote the screenplay ? This was same guy who complained about his Death Wish books being perversed on film ! :))

Yes ! I remember reading about this one. Walter Hill is making a return to film. :D I hope this'll be good.
