Omega out, Rolex in!

Hi All

Despite my love for DCs Bond movies I have sold my remaining two Omega Seamaster watches and bought a second Rolex (GMT Master II / 116710LN) which compliments my Submariner (16610) very nicely. Although I think Omega make some excellent quality and attractive watches I think Rolex has the edge.

I wonder how many members here (like me) would love to see Bond go back to wearing a Rolex?

As long as Omega pays big $$ for being a part of the Bond movies, I doubt, that Rolex (who always have refused doing so) will be seen on 007s wrist in the future

I totally agree, and that's the bottom line. My question, however, is how many here would like to see a return to Rolex rather than the probability of it happening.

It would be ideal, and while they're at it, can they get rid of the damned cliched (by now) Astons. Lovely car but enough already, as some foreign Bond fans say.

Stick the guy in a Bentley Continental convertible, please.

And any chance of Bond himself going back to being over six feet, dark and handsome?

So 0-3 then: as 'Toys says, some manufacturers pay £££s. And some short blondies MAKE'EM ALL £££sss.

I have to disagree on the Bentley thing. They are incredible cars, but more expensive than the Astons. As much as I like AM and it's cars (Have seen the Rapide recently next to a Panamera - what a difference!!!!) the UK taxpayer would never outfit their agents with an Aston Martin.

Re. Rolex: I have been bashed before on WUS for it: In my opinion, especially the friction pin construction from the Omega SS bracelets is inferior and as long as they are sticking with it, I can't take them as serious as Rolex - though the CR Planet Ocean watch is a VERY good watch!

In my life, I went thru several watch stages: I first had Rolex, then I purchased all the other brands and even sold my Rolexes. Then I went completely to Omega, sold them all and am back to Rolex again. And I think, that I'll stay here.

Well the way the story goes Bond, bought the Bentley pretty wrecked and his mechanic (a good freind of his) put his Bentley back together for him. So, its not really the firm who bought it for him. So, I think it would be nice to have the Bentley, not like it'll happen though.

I would definately prefer Bond in a Rolex. I've worn a submariner for 18 years now and although it's had two services and a replacement bezel, it's seen me through 11 years in the army, three war zones, five years of close protection in nasty locations, and two years hands-on work with property developing. It still looks like new.
After TND I almost brought an omega seamaster in an airport once, and it felt a hell of a lot inferior in quality. I'll stick to the Rolex for as long as it works.

Rolex all the way for me, simply 'cos I wear one, the Explorer II. They were the watch in the books, so he should have one on his wrist again. But I'd stick with the aston's, great to look at if nuthin else.

I'd like to see Bond in something a little more utilitarian than the Rolex now. Most of you know that my passion is Rolex, but in recent years, the newer models have gone down a different path from the great 'tool watches' of old. They are now becoming more of a fashion accessory than a working watch, which is the same route Breitling have taken in recent years too.

I honestly cannot say what would suite Craigs Bond more than the Planet Ocean at present. The older Subs would have done the job too, but not the newer ones. Maybe if we saw him with a more personal watch rather than the latest brand wanting to promote their new models. That would be nice.

I'd like to see Bond in a Bentley too. Pity the marque has lost its roots though.

apologies but whenever I see the Bentley Continental suggested for Bond my hackles rise and I worry that it might actually happen!...

Can anyone really suggest this monstrosity can even hold it's nose up against these beauties?...

    bentleycontgtc.jpgdbsvolante.jpgv8vantage.jpg

As ASP correctly admits bentley (after a desperate attempt to regain them with that immortal win at le Mans) has lost it's roots and become a cartoon of it's former self.

Which reminds me of what the Bentley GTC reminds me of when ever I see it...

Back to topic, and while I have always loved the Rolex, the Oceans are perfect for the modern DC-Bond....

That said, again, ASP spot on - free the timepiece from beckhamization and make it talk tempo!...

Chosing the Bentley over the current crop of Aston's is like having the most beautiful woman in the world in your bed, and then switching off the light! It just shouldn't be done...

The only problem about Bond, to me, is the watches he wears. I do NOT like the Rolex (except the Milgauss) and I certainly do not like Omega.

I personally do not own any watch (it's quite a hard thing to do, actually) as I am saving for a complicated Patek. To me, there is nothing else worth wearing, and it has ALWAYS been a great pain to see that James Bond was settling for some middle-range watch that is sold in every airport and that has some intrinsic value or research, but still, it's no Patek. Breguet or Lange would've been fine too. But I'm not saying everyone should drop more than 10,000$ on a watch, I'm just saying that James Bond should and that I prefer not to have any watch than anything else.

Well Rolex was in the books… but I guess it is all about money. that is the reason for the Omega (still a nice brand etc)… but I still thinks it is about time – Rolex vintage, Omega for the new Bonds – I am fine with that.

Aston Martin is also in the book (DB4, if I remember correct) – so let him continue to drive Aston (please never again BMW etc)

Ditto what ASP said with one caveat. The Bentleys that Bond drove in the novels were older, not brand spanking new. The later "locomotive" had a bent chassis that was straightened and a new convertible body put on. So Bond should be driving an older personal car. Perhaps that's why he's driving the DB5 that he won at poker. However, in real life the DB5 would be handled as a seized vehicle, that Bond might be able to drive, but it would not be owned by him. The moment it got too expensive to repair it would be gone.

Bond wouldn't wear one of these. The Rolex subs and Brietlings were chosen for their rugged class. Action men watches for action men who can still use the correct cutlary. The Omegas fit this bill also. I fear a Bond in a patek would still be seated at the dining table during the action sequences. :))
I have also never heard of anyone saving up for a Patek. You can or you can't. You pay cash or you get credit which you can afford to pay off, but at no time do you ever have to save. Your whole life must need a lot more in it before saving for a watch like this. 8-)

Submariner. The most beautiful yet stalwart looking diving Rolex of all time. Could MI6 afford to give it to their agents? They are a government organization- havent you been watching TV lately? Governments spend infinetly on everything!

    rolex_submariner_2.jpg

And it would add a little complexity and refinement to Craig persona, imop, which is a little bit too brash and simple. Personally my favorite is the Omega seamaster from Goldeneye in Quartz- which I own right next to my Colt .45

The British Government issued Royal Navy divers with Rolex Submariners for many years. They switched to the cheaper CWC Divers Watch some years ago but considering the cost of military equipment the price of a Submariner is tiny.

And Bond was ex-Royal Navy was he not? Oh and a diver... :))

Beautiful watches and the name and history certainly puts it in a class above the rest- that black and silver is hard to beat- just high class like a Benz. But personally I always thought that the Seamaster of mine- from Goldeneye- was an exceptionally great Bond watch. Goldeneye was just so damn good that it is hard not to love it when he uses it to set the remote mines- and to cut the bottom out of that train with its laser. I also love that beautiful saphire blue look to it. It looked best on Brosnan too because it matched his eyes. It was also in the same class as Bond's BMW Z3- being semi-expensive but not beyond the reach of a common man- which made it even more vouge. 90s idealism sure was fun at times.

Normal people buy Patek. What you said is just not true. And I definitely would not get credit to buy a watch. And obviously I have the money (it's not a condo, it's still a watch), but it's more of a mind-thing. You want to start saving to buy a watch you want. It builds up the desire and you don't use the money already saved up or you don't have to sell your shares.

tbh guys i got my seamy on 0% finance. i had the money to buy it outright, but why turn down the chance at building up your credit rating a little and have the interest in my account instead of mr omega's?

nothing 'wrong' with saving up or buying a watch on finance. the trouble is though, some people don't do their sums first, or take into account that one day that watch will need servicing which aint cheap.

I love the new Rolex GMT (Master II) with the Ceramic Bezel. It is on my list and will be the next one i purchase.

    Here are my little babies:

Seiko SKX007 - I absolutely love this watch, maybe not a true Bond watch even though he wore Seikos (Roger Moore as Bond) - it is an absolutely great looking Dive watch.

    Omega Seamaster Professional 300m (2220.80.00)

    Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (45.5mm)

    Rolex Submariner.

Actually mate, if that is the listed Omega SMP in the pic, it isn't the 2220.80.00. That version is the Co-Axial version while (if yours is automatic) yours is the earlier 2531.80 worn by Brosnan in all his films other than GoldenEye. Cheers
