PB era a reboot ?

Why did some people consider goldeneye a reboot? I felt with goldeneye it was the same bond who had been in the previous 16 movies, i thought the continuity was pretty good. I was not so sure about tomorrow never dies, with the whole paris thing.

Because the pre-title sequence takes place some ten years earlier, which would put it before Timothy Dalton's first film. Perhaps not so much a reboot as an erasure of history.

Hmm I'm not sure whether GE is a complete "re-boot" as there are some small nods to Bond's previous experiences.

    Trevelyan's speech for one
"I hear the new M is a lady"

However it was certainly an "update" of the series.

I don't see it as a re-boot in the same way as Casino Royale. It is an update though for sure. There was a long gap between films and with a new actor in the role, they made some changes ie a woman as M (very fitting for the time as Stella Rimmington had not long been head of MI5), Bond being evaluated as he is seen as an outdated asset, but they also kept a nod to his past with references to women he had failed to protect etc - I always took this as Tracy, judging be the smarting look on Brosnan's face when Trevellyan says this.
Although I like Craig and the new films, I would have prefered another update rather than this dramatic re-boot. There leaves no scope to resurect Bond's past, his triumphs and failures, or old adversaries...

I too am not a fan of rebooting Bond. I'm hoping after the Craig series, they will pick up with the original continuity. If they keep Bond following Craig's continuity, they will have to remake every Ian Fleming adventure which seems really dumb. I'm thinking they will just refer to Craig's films as prequels even though they introduced a female M and Felix Leiter far earlier.

Not at all. The reboot's done and over. I highly doubt Eon will revisit any previously filmed title; they'll just move on...and if viewers want to consider the Craig films 'prequels', and mentally file them in front of Dr. No and the others, that's perfectly fine. Millions of Bond fans can arrange things in their own heads millions of ways! No harm done! :)

Also despite the changed licence plate number the Aston Martin DB5 in Goldeneye is suppost to be the same one from Goldfinger and Thunderball. As for the events in the teaser being set prior to the events in The Living Daylights by one year, that was most likely done to show Bond as having been active during the Cold War. The only reference to keep Goldeneye away from the past films is the during the scene in M's office with her reminding Bond that MI6 does not allow personel vendettas (This is a refrence to Licence to Kill were Bond went rouge, and after the poor boxoffice of that film the producers wanted to move forward from that mistake.) As for rebooting older films, the producers have said that they have no interest in doing that even if some of the older films did not work for movie goers back in the day.

PS: Not to nit pick, but it It was Valentin Zukovsky who said the line about the new M being a lady, not Trevelyan.
