Tomorrow never dies BMW missiles - done!

Quick show-off post as I jump into this car and head to a spy themed New Year's eve charity ball to benefit the Boys and Girls club of Santa Paula where this car will be on display:

It's a static display only since a transforming one would take a lot more fabrication time, and probably require me to cut into the car. But there is plenty of room in the back of the missile tubes for solenoid valves to hook up a compressor and have some fun with foam rubber castings and some NERF technology.

Now I just need to finish up the projects I have in the pipeline with Ed so there's some toys for the kids to play with at future shows.

Nice! is that a 5 or 7 series?

It's definately not a 7 series. It IS bloody brilliant though. I'd love to see the faces on his local BMW service guys when he takes it in for an oil change. "Change the filter, but whatever you do, don't touch that button..."

personally i think it's bloody fantastic, you can actually see from these pics that whoever made this has really done a proper job. there's nothing worse that half arsed attempts, and this is certainly been done with alot of thought and observations.

    my only 'down side' on it that i can really think of is this;
"you've gone so far to get it to this stage, why not go just a little further and make it work?"

in the words of mrs doyle; "ah go on go on go on go on go on go on go on GO ON!!!"

Well I never thought I'd see the day when Jeff is encouraging the use of untested and unlicensed pyrotechnics to propel projectiles from a home made weapon. Maybe 2011 is going to be a good year after all :))

    Yes, I know it's Stateside, but it's a start

    It's definately not a 7 series.

Of course it's not a 7 series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E38 Why would anyone build a set of sunroof missiles to fit in the sunroof of a 7 series?

Since driving with real or real-looking weapons is a felony in California this is a removable assembly that slips into the sunroof opening for shows when parked so I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the reactions of local traffic!

I'm unpacking the car as we speak - will have some shots of the charity ball in the next day or two. Quite a success, everybody loved the car and the event raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Boys and Girls club. And I got plenty of good wisecracks in with my John Cleese-y Q costume.

Because a 7 series would make it more authentic?

Anybody spotted the similarity/coincidence with the TWINE Z8 yet?

Good eye! I couldn't find any reference shots of the rockets from TND except an illustration on the UK quad poster so I used the TWINE Estes Bullpup rockets and modified them a little bit to look like what you could see on screen in TND as well as the poster.

(It should be plain from the full sized shots that this is actually a 1997 7 series of the E38 model line, the same model and year used for the film... the only change I made was I went for grey leather instead of black as an accomodation to the California summers)

Is it the "iL" version (Long wheel base?) like in the film? or the standard E38?

My car is a short wheelbase 740i. From what I have read (from the owner of the remaining street worthy car from this chase, the "setup car" used for blocking scenes before bringing in the modified vehicles) EON used 740s in this sequence to avoid wrecking a dozen of the expensive model, but all of the cars were badged as 750s to boost sales for the expensive model. I honestly can't tell in the film whether they used long wheel base or short wheel base 740 cars except during the close-ups of the rear window when Bond jumps in, even though the car looks a bit shorter to me during a few of the tigher turning shots.

Also, the brake lights were disabled on all of the stunt cars so it looked like Bond had the pedal down during the entire chase!

    INSANE.

As in a way I admire.

    Just next in line.
