I remember reading that Desmond found it harder to remember lines and had suggested an apprentice for Q before to take over all the "tec talk", But I think they missed a chance with LTK if they had of had Q killed by Sanchez Dieing in Bonds Arms I think the revenge storyline would of been stronger as Q had become a Father figure in the series, Although I'd Hope Dalton's Bond wouldn't of thrown Q's Body into a Dumster.

Then DC would have said "he wouldnt have cared"

I must say it has always puzzled me, as if they knew Desmond was going to pass away before the next film. The way he goes down on the lift with the ethereal music is quite spooky!

It's very odd indeed, yet I think its a fitting final scene for a much-loved character. There were certainly hints that Desmond was at least contemplating leaving. The commentary on the TWINE dvd, which (I think) was recorded before his death, suggests this.

I remember meeting Desmond Llewelyn at the premiere of The World is not Enough in Amsterdam in 1999. He looked full of spirit but did hint this would be his last 007 movie. It was quite a shock to learn he had died only a few weeks later.

that is an interesting idea thunderpussy but my worry is even if they did that Desmond might have still been back as Q in goldeneye as if LTK never happened.

I read an interview from John Cleese around the time DAD was released suggesting he was intended as Llewllyn's Q's assistant for the forseeable future, so lewellyn could retire whenever he fancied and there would be a ready-made replacement.
Of course, John Cleese's Q was anything but a worthy alternative.

I thought he did quite well in DAD. The character had gotten his act together and actually took his job seriously. Maybe its because I've always been a fan of Mr Cleese.
