The James Bond Cold Shower Technique

(from the author of the article)

As a kid, I was a big James Bond fan. Saw all the movies and read all the books. One thing I noticed about the book version of James Bond was that every time he took a shower, he would start off with the water nice and hot, and then turn it down to cold for the last few minutes. Perhaps this little detail of Bond’s personal bathing regimen was a subtle way for Ian Flemming to illustrate Bond’s Scottish ancestry, as this type of shower is commonly known as a “Scottish Shower.” Who knows.

Being an impressionable kid, I started doing it too. I didn’t know the proper name for this type of shower, so I just called it the “James Bond Shower.” Taking a shower that started hot and ended cold proved to be quite invigorating. It woke me up and added a bit of pep to my step throughout the day. I’ve continued the practice of the James Bond Shower into adulthood. Along the way, I’ve discovered that cold water baths have been used for centuries as a way to treat various ailments and that modern studies lend credence to the health claims associated with this age old treatment.

Below we give a brief rundown on the benefits of the James Bond Shower and details: (go to link for full details)

    read that in the novels - but never actually try - may be I should .... thank you for the reminder -{

I've been doing that for years, long before I started reading the Bond books. My ex-wife used to think I was some kind of sadist, but in teaching, it does have significant health benefits, one being that aforementioned 'pep-step'.

An ice cold finish is not necessary. Merely tepid to cold water will do after a hot lather and rinse shower. What this does (other than emotionally invigorating the mind so the body is prepared for moving as opposed to feeling warm and lanquid) is close the pores on the scalp and skin (cold contracts). This is the same method experienced shavers do because closing the facial pores by splashing cold water on after a hot shave minimizes the quick sting when splashing on alcohol based after-shaves at the end. The cold rinse finish also closes the outside of the hair shafts on the scalp, which allows more light to reflect off the hair giving it the appearence of a healthy shine!

Im Scottish and I HATE cold showers, but if its good enough for James Bond then maybe I will give it another go!

I did that when I first read the books, but drifted away from it. I remember feeling very invigorated and had a bit more spring in my step - I'm going to reintroduce it tomorrow and watch for the results. Come to think of it, I used to do Bond's press-up and sit-up routine before the shower as well. I could definately do with reintroducing that one as well...

Ditto. However, I don't think I'll be going back to the cold shower though. Nevertheless, It would be great to see a return to it and the press-ups in the next Craig outing.

I hear Bond even sometimes left his tux on when taking showers.

Yes, I do the hot shower followed by cold shower and towel myself off roughly. I even wash my face with warm water and a bunch of cold splashes afterwards. I also do 50 situps and 50 pushups almost every morning. I try to add in some jumping jacks as well.

I only do the push-ups on gym days. Counterproductive otherwise.

    Why is it counterproductive?

A cold shower is supposed to help you lose weight, if it's for five mins or so. It's better to start off warm to avoid a shock!

It's probably called a Scottish shower because it'll save you heating the water for the last few minutes :D
Anyway, not my kind of thing - showers should be warm.

I work out three times a week with weights, and always have a shower as cold as humanly possible afterwards. This helps to get rid of lactic acid build up in the muscles, and of course cools ya down. I've been doing this for years, come rain or snow. It is good for you.

Yeah tried it out again this morning - it does invigorate you! It's strangely enjoyable, more so afterwards when you dry off.

The Scots must have evolved for cold showers. I have tried this a few times. On a hot summer night it may be refreshing, if it's for 10-20 seconds only. But If I try a cold shower in winter, I can guarantee a sore throat and a cold the next day!

Plus I shower in the evening, not in the morning, so I do not need to feel invigorated - quite the opposite, I like my shower to make me feel cosy and in the mood for bed!

I suspect Bond used cold water to avoid the bill for hot water.

Besides, as oversexed as he was.... cold showers probably helped keep his "impulses" under control.

On rest days you need to allow your muscle to recover, otherwise you'll not build strength and devlopment. That means no working out, not anything.

I'm too lazy and easy on myself - I take very hot showers. Don't do as I do, do as I say. Take light, soft-core refreshing showers.

That's interesting. Are you still working muscle groups or doing total body workouts?

When I get out of the shower, there is not a better feeling than slapping a large handful of after shave on my sack :v how many of you could handle that :v

You lot will be rubbing each other with mink gloves next 8-) and shouldn't this be in off topic or something.
