Hi guys, as you're probably already aware, Japan has been hit by a massive earthquake recently.

I'd just like to pass on my sympathies to anyone affected by this, my thoughts are with you.

I'd like to add my voice to these sentiments Minigeff. It's a terrible tragedy for a beautiful and cultured nation.

Yeah maybe not that many people check out the "off topic" forum very often. I don't.

Yeah, okay, but I'm not sure there's much to add. Personally I don't know anyone in Japan, it would be different if it were in the US and someone on the forum might be affected and could read it. Who are we posting for, ourselves or them? Then again I sometimes wonder about posting in the obit columns here when we make it seem like their relatives will randomly choose to log to a James Bond website to read our tributes.... If we don't check out the Off Topic forum on ajb much, I daresay Japan has more pressing matters to deal with....

I have staid away from this thread because i don't find words to express how deeply sorry and concerned I am about what happened.

    Imagine:

    1. An earthquake of scale 9.0
    2. Then a Tsunami with waves high as 23 meters!
    3. And then a nuclear desaster.

This entire thing has no comparison and I am feeling with these people. We have friends there, fortunately everyone is ok.

I know, that we germans have the image of being very irrational about nuclear energy but to my opinion we have seen how not perfect our technology is. If it can happen in Japan, it can happen everywhere.

My youngest son lives in Japan, and my family and I have been extremely concerned ever since this tragedy occurred. Fortunately he lives in Osaka, which is not that close to the epicenter of the earthquake (although he felt it) or the tsunami, and is not within the immediate area of concern regarding the nuclear fallout. Still, the entire country is feeling the effects on some level, and I continue to keep my son, his wife, and all the people in Japan in my thoughts and prayers. (I've also tried to convince him to come back to the U.S., but so far no luck).

I looked at this post not long after it was made. I didn't want to get on the sympathy bandwagon, I thought what everybody else probably thought, and there was no point adding the obvious. I was in Sri Lanka and saw the devestation of the last tsunami, and although by no means in any danger at the time, it really affected me for a long time afterwards, and even now to be honest. If my own loosely made travel itinary were a few days ahead my wife and I might not be here. I gave up working in private security right afterwards. I could chose where I worked, with whom, and what precautions to take. My work was very dangerous, but I was well trained and pretty good at it. But acts of god are a real unnecessary bitch and I thought it was time to change my life and hedge my bets a little because you never know what's around the corner.
