USA here they come, the cars of the Bond Museum at Keswick together with cars of the Stars are to relocate...

I'm sure they could do a deal with some major theme-park company (e.g. Merlin Ents) and find somewhere else in this country, if they really have to move. Have they said WHY they are moving them? ... presumably because they can earn much bigger money over in Florida.
Cheers

Agreed; compared to their current location they might as well be in Florida. At least you'll see a bit of sunshine there :v

I try to get to the UK once a year or so, and while I am sure the lake district is a nice place, it was not easily accessible for me as a tourist.
Combine that with the fact that often vehicles were lent out for exhibition, it just was not a great situation. (I understand the economics of lending out vehicles - I just point it out because the one time I was able to arrange enough free time to visit the museum - I emailed ahead to find out that half of the cars I wanted to see wouldn't be there, so I didn't bother going.)
Hopefully they'll get a more permanent home and as many people as possible can enjoy them.
So that will be India then ? Or China ?
Yea...I mean it's not like the Lake District is a tourist area or anything 8-)
Actually, I can see his point M. I love the Lake District and finding the Bond Museum was a happy accident while I was there last September. I have known about the Cars of The Stars for a while, but even with floating around in here, my eyebrows went up when I saw it listed on local tourist leaflets while I was in the area. (Shrugs.)
Oh, SOO sorry. I thought "English speaking" was implied.
I should have said "It should be where the most typical Bond fans* can see them."
* Typical Bond fan = English speaking person, middle income, with 2-3 hours of free time for a museum visit
And yes, while the Lake District may be a tourist area, I guess I should have qualified my statement by saying I didn't have the 5 hour drive time (both ways, so 10 hours) to devote to getting to the Lake District since I typically stay in London when I visit the UK.
So let me revise the statement - The Lake District wasn't easily accessible to London-based itineraries.
I have no idea what the Lake District tourism numbers are, but I would imagine it can't be anywhere near what London has. I would think something closer to London would have brought in a lot more fans.
Tourism aside, London has a population of 7 million, and Miami only 5.5 million.
I have no wish to get into a slanging match with you doublenoughtspy, I have the upmost respect for you in terms of the Bond World...but...
I did find your posts VERY patronising....as though anything Bond can only be (or survive) in the US....
I also think your idea of a typical Bond fan is way off the mark....surely more non-English speaking people have seen the Bond films..?...
Don't forget that Peter Nelson bought these vehicles when nobody else was interested (that includes the US), and he was effectively a 'one-man-band' and had to manage his collection the best he could...and saved these vehicles from the scrapheap...to set up in London would have been too exspensive...and too far from where he lives...so I think he deserves to be cut a little slack...
From what I can gather Peter has been looking to sell for quite awhile and it is a shame his Bond Museum has had to close....but that's probably got more to do with the recession..?...
Charles...the next time you come to the UK...perhaps you could fly into Birmingham or Manchester..?..or take a good look around Liverpool....?...both Wales and Scotland are worth a visit too....but if you do...bring an umbrella
Couple of points if I may....
1. You guys are two of my favorite people on this forum and contribute enormously.
Charles has written one of the best books on bond in years
And sir m keeps this forum ticking over, giving his time generously.
I love a passionate debate like anyone, but time to shake....
2. As a Brit living in the USA, I can see both opinions clearly.
I am gutted I never got to the museum myself, and the one occasion I planned to take am outoftowner to it the logistics didn't fit and we didn't go.
I was skeptical but was rooting for it's success .... And have nothing but admiration for Peter Nelson as you mention - dedication to bond beyond the call of duty.
3 but this whole episode promotes greater questions..
How can uk not have a museum dedicated to it's best loved icon (at least once the Royals go back to their normal status - occupying the ground between curio and scandal)
How can a nation in search of new ways to compete for export revenue continue to sit back and ignore national treasures? Or worse still even create barriers?
While the perimeters of the uk truely are spectacular (sir m, how can a lancastrian like you complain about a bit of rain?) unless the transport links are improved soon they are in serious trouble. Travel time and frequency are only part of the challenge - cost is almost as serious.
The uk would be smart to learn from our cousins in all these regards.
4 while Miami might seem a strange choice , least it has the pull of bond-related sites close by, and decades of knowledge of how to do the "entertainment experience" with Disney etc.
5. As regards the typical bond fan, the fact is there just isn't one. Bonds appeal, as testified by the films, transcends the boundaries of age, wealth, sex, race and language.
That said, tourism is set to become one of the great growth industries as we all age, and tourism-cash will become competitive with multiple opportunities.
I won't go down the usual eon-questioning alleyway.....I'm confident that once the 50th anniversary is out of the way an eon-sanctioned accolade to bond will follow.
So, given the broader importance of this sad event, passionate debate is understandable.
But we all want the same thing.... Shake on it {[]
does anyone know when its moving??????
On behalf of the Yanks, I agree and sympathize with my fellow Bond fans in the UK. It's a bit of a travesty not to have a significant Bond museum in the UK. But I also have to agree with fellow posters; with the museum being a 5.5 hour drive from London, I wondered how I would ever find the time to get there.
If the survival of the Bond Museum depends on finding a more touristy area to keep it, then I have to lend my support. Just think of what a larger tragedy it would be if the museum failed outright.
As I said...don't want to argue with Charles....but....well, you know what I thought....
And as a proud Lancastrian I didn't complain about the rain....I complained about God giving us lungs instead of gills )
As I stated before...why not try the rest of the Uk...?...there is much more to the UK than just London Village...
The flight over must take quite a few hours...more than 5.5 I think ?
No time at alll I'm afraid, as I posted the other day: http://www.ajb007.co.uk/post/488574/#p488574
the doors closed at the end of play on Friday 6th .
