DAD homages

Ok so I'm probably really late on the up take, but ...
having watched DAD recently, I compiled my list of "homages" to the previous 19 Bond films. I'm aware these were deliberatly included by the writers/produceers/directors, but I have never known how many there were, or what they were. I know there is a DVD soundtrack you can listen to, but I'm too lazy to bother, and frankly testing my own memory banks was more fun.
This is my list, does anyone have any others to add?

1. Gun barrel – NUMEROUS
2. Surfing suits are stripped off to reveal real suits – GF
3. Smuggling diamonds – DAF

DAD is the death of James Bond, a homage to the pts of YOLT.

I haven't watched Die Another Day enough to find all those. I think I've only watched the full movie once maybe twice. Anyway, my favorite and what I didn't see on the list is the eating grape scene from Thunderball.

Well, there 's a scene in TB isn't there when Bond in nonchalent mode stops to pick a grape off a fruit bowl and eat it before leaving, it's at Shrublands when he's looking at the bandaged Lippe or something. I guess there's a similar scene in DAD.

Ah yes, I remember it now, when he's searching Lippe's room and Angelo disturbs him.
No idea where the equivalent scene is in DAD.
    Help, please, Silent Spy!

It is in the scene in Cuba at the clinic. Bond distracts the guards by driving the guy in the wheelchair into a wall, then climbs trough the window of a patient's room, says hi and eats a grape.

Yes, that's it. I wish many of the homage scenes were that subtle. Too many were the look at us we're referencing a past Bond film type. Especially the Halle Berry bikini scene. Which wasn't that impressive to me compared to the original. Quantum of Solace has the same problems, the biggest of which is the homage to Goldfinger.

One homage to YOLT that never made it was Little Nellie. Ken Wallis had taken Nellie to Pinewood (at Eons request) and when he later collected it commented that it was exactly where he had left it. Methinks that the stickers/decals adorning the nacelle weren't to Eon's liking and it seems that no-one could be bothered to "cover" the offending items to allow filming of her - such a shame.

A friend and I use the distinction 'homage' vs 'fromage' and the ref in QOS was most definitley cheesy to say the least...lazy and crass filmaking, which I hope we avoid in 23.

In my opinion, the Halle Berry "rising from the ocean scene" topped the original. No knock on Ursula Andress, who was fantastic, but I found Ms. Berry to be even more stunning. Can't say the same about her acting in DAD, though. In general, I think she's a good actress, but I thought some of her line readings in DAD were way off.

I just watched the Halle Berry clip on YT and it's still not that great. It's as showy as I remember with the slow motion and no where near as natural as the Honey Rider scene. Her acting is just as bad too in Die Another Day. I'm probably not Halle Berry's biggest fan. X2 is her best performance and even that is strained at times.

I totally agree about Berry's acting in DAD and X-2, although she has occasionally been quite good ("Jungle Fever", "Monster's Ball"). But I also think she is an incredibly beautiful and sexy woman. Sure, her rise from the ocean scene was very showy and splashy, and too obviously an homage to Dr. No, but I still enjoyed the heck out of it. Oh well, to each his own, my friend.

Great List. Loved Halle coming out of the water. All the homages are why I like DAD, I know it gets bashed alot and yeah it went all moonraker in it's absurdity, but I think one of the reasons Bond has lasted so long is because the movies are like an accordion. It stretches out so it can stretch in ect. YOLT twice goes absurd, then Majesty goes more realistic, Moonraker is a comic book then FYEO comes back down to earth. Sir Roger is tongue in cheek, Dalton is serious. DAD goes over the top and we are rewarded with a classic FRWL type movie in CR. I think this is why we are looking forward to our 50th year of Bond movies ( Think about that for a second, that is amazing in it's own right ) Also Chrisnos1 I think I have another one for you. Just watched AVTAK and Bond uses a piece of fender from a snowmobile and he skies to the beach boy music. In DAD Bond uses a piece of fender from the ice speed racer and surfs to safety on it.

That's a good post. It reminds me of a post about YOLT on another site, someone praised it because it was the first film to get beyond Fleming, which the series had to do. It's true, up until that point they were more or less based on the novels and sort of grounded. Some like that, but in a way it would have been like many movie adaptations today, ie Potter and LOTR, you are merely following the plot already lain down and if you've read it, surprises are few. That may be why they introduced gimmicks into the films, gadgets etc, to surprise the avid readers. The opening of FRWL, for instance. Also, Grant taking Bond's cigarette case when he's lying unconcious in the train.
