Certainly not XL. Probably a medium really, if that. Assuming you want a tight-ish fit. I have a 40in chest and think I got a small in the end, had to change it.
I'm a 46 chest & very broad in the shoulders & an XL fits me well. I'd certainly go with a size Large mate.
This might sound strange, but has anyone else found a difference in the sizings of the black polos in comparison to the navy blue ones? My black version is certainly a tighter fit.

I have 2 blacks and both are tighter then my Navy and higher up on my arms
I have both the Navy and Black in Medium, both purchased same day from the London store and the Navy fits a 42 inch chest perfectly but the Black is a bit loose. Was going to take it back as the shop is only a few hundred yards from the office but actually don't mind the slightly looser fit.
I guess you need to decide what kind of look you want. I'm 5'11'' and I have very long arms. I wanted a snug fit like Craig has in the movie, so I took a chance and went with a large (I have a big chest too). When the shirt arrived, I liked the fit, but the shirt was totally digging into my underarms (the sleeves are very short due to the Riviera style). However, after wearing the shirt a few times, the digging sensation went away and now the shirt feels good.

Seems that there are sizing issues between the colours judging by the later replies.
