Your Relative's Taste in Booze

For me, my first exposure to the world of adult beverages was observing what my relatives drank. Here's the rundown...

Mother's Side
Mom: Crown Royal & Coke. Chivas Regal. Korbel Brut. Piper-Heidsieck Brut. Dom Perignon. Whiskey Sours. Bloody Marys. A rare Coors Light.
Grandfather: Seagram's 7 & Coke. Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Grandmother: Teetotaller

Father's Side
Dad: Bourbon on the rocks. Chilled Riunite.
Grandfather: Bourbon on the rocks.
Grandmother: Bourbon on the rocks. Ernest & Gallo Chablis. Bloody Marys.
Great-Grandfather: Dry martinis made with Seagram's gin. (By the pitcher!)
Great-Grandmother: Ernest & Gallo Chablis.

Stepfather: Red Stripe. The rare martini, made with either vodka or gin.

Do you recall what your relatives drink and/or drank?

Not many drinkers in my family.

My Dad used to put away his and everyone else's share of Christian Brothers Brandy. He gave it up about 15 years ago.

My Moms Dad would have an occasional beer. Hamms I think was the beer he drank. If we all went out for a nice dinner he'd have a highball. That's about it.

Mmm, interesting.

My maternal Grandmother (who I was really close too, but died when I was 12) enjoyed whisky and water - which is, I'm sure where I got the romantic notion that drinking whisky was somehow stylish. She was a very elegant lady... and dressed impeccably... and drove a Triumph Herald soft top... racing green, with leather gloves, well into her early 60's.

My Mum - not much of a drinker... but it was german wine, especially Liebfraumilch.... and always Pimms in the summer. I think she was partial to vodka and tonic too.... but she doesn't tend to drink that anymore.

My Dad - bless him, but anything really

) Mainly beer (ale over lager) with for a taste for Brandy and ginger - and of course red wine. Port as well, on special occasions.

Both my grandfather's passed before I was born.... and my paternal grandmother, I wasn't too close to. So don't really know.

My gran would always have a "Whisky Mac" at Christmas, Dad is "half a lager" (usually Carlsberg), Mum would have a Baileys at Christmas and be slurring her words after one! Not big drinkers and nothing interesting. I take liberated Irish Poteen out at Christmas and challenge anyone who will have a go. It's as strong as it gets and so-called serious drinkers never manage to down it in one...

I never saw my paternal grandfather drink, as I knew him when he was quite elderly.
never knew my maternal grandfather
my maternal grandmother wrinkles her nose at alcohol.
never knew my paternal grandmother.

my mother is quite partial to wines. all kinds of wines. and the occasional beer.
dad likes wheat beers (gag me) and IPAs (double gag)

my mother's sisters are probably where I get my drinking habits.

mom's younger sister drinks like a fish. and so do I...but only when I go out. Aunt Elaine is a wine person, and I suppose most of my wine love comes from shopping for and drinking wine with her and my mom.

and then, there was this one time where that same aunt stood at the bottom of the stairs...at 7 AM...and screeched that everyone had better come to the kitchen NOW because she was making mimosas...

my family is weird, but god do I love 'em

I think TSA, is talking about "Real Poteen" which is Rocket fuel. I knew a farmer who got supplies of it,He Never Drank it. Used it as an alcohol rub for his cattle.

) The stuff you can buy in shops is just the same as any vodka/whisky etc. I have a mate who drank a load of it once, he basically stayed drunk for a couple of days and had a hangover for almost a week.

) That's why I stick to Beer.

Ha! OK, this stuff isn't really for the boys either! I'm not a big drinker and I know you could probably drink me under the table. This stuff was taken from a couple of naughty boyos in Northern Ireland. They had a bootful of the stuff and almost got themselves shot trying to bypass our checkpoint - we sent them on their way and kept it off the streets so to speak... It's apparently about as strong as you can take without going blind... All I know is Smirnoff is like water in comparison...

On my father's side:

Dad: Vodka mostly, beer too
Grandpa: whiskey or beer
A close uncle: Beer

Mom's side

Mom:

Baccardi & Coke
7&7
Any fu-fu drink ever invented

Grandmother:

Whiskey or Beam & Coke
Rarely Beer

Close Aunt: (married to the Uncle above)

Beer or Beam & Coke
