Some people argue price increases just make things overpriced, but really, as long as the product remains the unique and renowned product, the price doesn't have to remain the same. They have a right to make a Rolex or similar renowned product cost more because if people say, "Oh, it is overpriced and not worth that. I'll get something better for less," then that individual will end up with an alternative, but the only way to get the product is to pay its price. That exclusivity adds to the price justification on top of it still being the one and only of that product. It's similar to Apple's pricing (though they tend to lower prices on occasions), which alienates people who say they are able to get a comparable PC. There are thousands of PCs, but only one Apple line, thus Apple is unique, renowned, and no one else has the same stunning design achievements.
That was a long and not so well said though basically saying, the only way to get a Rolex is to pay for the Rolex, thus that simple restriction makes the increasing price largely justified.
I wanted a Bond Omega and looked at a seamaster (quartz/blue face/stainless strap) at Heathrow. It felt cheap compared to my sub. I don't like the way Rolex is written all around the inside of the face on the new ones - looks a bit tacky IMO. Amazed to see a new version of mine is around £5k - will be sticking with mine for another 19 years at least... )

Nothing to add here because Bondtoys pretty much has it covered. Like Bondtoys my first Rolex was a GMT Master II that I chose over the Submariner because I used to travel a lot as a mariner (Merchant Marine Officer). Then I went off the rails and added a lot of other Bond watches and non Bond watches. I love watches! Not much on digital watches, but I did add a cool digital watch to my collection a couple of years ago with a Bond-esque appeal. Perhaps I'll post a picture later.

This is the watch I was referring to. Does anyone know what watch this is? I'll give you a hint, it goes with a car.
Sorry for the dust, I just dug it out.

"People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." Richard Grenier after George Orwell, Washington Times 1993.
You both are correct. It is Michel Knight's comlink from the original T.V. series Knight Rider. The original prop was based on a Star Wars radio watch that had plug in ear phones. The prop was made simply by discarding the earphones and putting a sticker over the watch face that said "Transmit" and "Engage". However this watch was manufactured by a fellow from one of the Knight Rider forums with the "Transmit" and "Engage" portion under the crystal. Likewise it was manufactured without a working radio. A very cool prop that cost, if memory serves, around $50.00. I just could not pass it up.

I have a Rolex Submariner 16610 and love it! Not a true Bond watch in terms of it never been seen on screen in a Bond movie BUT most certainly a Bondian watch. I personally prefer the date version (although I also love the non-date Sub) but that is personal taste and I think you should opt for the one that 'sings' to you the most when you buy one.
Unless you buy the new Submariner with the ceramic bezel you are most likely going to have to get one of these pre-owned. The 5513 is a lovely watch and I would still like to acquire one or you can go for something a little newer like the 16610 or the 14060 (the latter of which just about still appears in some dealers windows as brand new).
Whatever you do don't try to do it on the cheap! Go to a proper authorised dealer for a new one or a respected jewellers for a pre-owned example. Get a good one and look after it and you may well still be wearing in in 30 years time! I intend to be wearing mine for many years to come!
To be honest I'm not after the closest to a "on screen" Bond watch so I really am open to all models however defo after a new one or certainly a recent "mint" pre-owned one with next to nothing wear wise.
First thing I need to do is eliminate preference of date or no date - if no date then of course its going to be the 14060. Im strangely finding this very difficult as today I am 50/50 again.
Im going to take my time with this one so I don't make any rash decisions
The other question (for me) of course is if I pulled the trigger would my Auto Omega Seamaster be just a collectors item or would I still want to wear it. I guess this could also influence a Brand Spanking new Submariner or a Pre-Owned example from a reputable dealer.
Im not really the kind of person to just wear it for special occasions either, it would be intended to be on my wrist at most times.

I look at it pretty much like this. I think the brand and maybe the style of watch are fun to get close to Bond's, but unless I find the screen exact model's to be my favorite in the store, I am going to pick the one that "sings" to me. I am much more interested in a new model Submariner or Seamaster that I like rather than trying to get a screen accurate one just because it is screen accurate. But if I love a new screen used model, then great.
How easy / quick is it to change from Bracelet to Nato?
Any of you guys use Nato strap much or keep on bracelet? I would imagine I would prob wear on a black Nato strap for daily use and change to bracelet for more formal occasions.
Something I love about the Sub on a plain black Nato style strap (I know not very Bond)
...some people found a smart way to get around the non-date problem with a Non-Date Sub:
They use the turning bezel to display the date. E.G. on the foliowing pic, the date is the 25th:
It's actually a nice looking watch without the date. Nice and symmetrical. Date is handy though, and the bezel moves through daily use, so I think although its a good idea, the date positioning wouldn't work for most.

If I can give an advise for a Submariner, get one with a Maxidial!
That means, that the hour markers are larger than we have seen it for decades.
And that will consequently mean:
Get a 16610LV (Anniversary old model with the green bezel) and get a black bezel insert installed.
These are getting very rare now in perfect condition but they are still available
Alternatively: 116610LN New model with the ceramic bezel
Prices:
16610LV retail US$ 6.400,-- and no dicount is possible
116610LN retail US$ 8.000,-- but you can get them for US$ 7.200,-- realisticly.
If you are asking me, for an US$ 800,-- price difference, you get a far better watch with the Sub C, but the "old" model 16610LV is prettier, simpler and well proven. Also more similar to the Bond watches.
Everybody to do his own decision.
My decision was:
Bondtoys,
Quick question - you say the turning of the Bezel on the Ceramic Sub is fantastic and smooth with nice click etc. Does this also apply to the 50th Anniversary model or just the ceramic new model?
Read up a fair bit on the Rolex Forum about changing Bezels on the Anniversary model to black. It seems not too hard a task however is this something you:
1) Do yourself or leave for jeweller?
2) Do you change back and forth depending on mood between black and green bezel (although black is obviously the classic and best, the green has actually grown on me too)
1. The bezel on the New Sub (116610 with the Ceramics bezel) is much better than the one on the older Subs (including the Anniversary 16610LV)
2. The bezel on all older Subs (including 16610LV) is good but nothing compared to the new one. All 16610 models (including 16610LV) have the same kind of bezel.
3. The bezel on my Anniversary Sub (old) is black, I don't change it to green. I don't like the green one
4. I know how to remove the bezel on the old model but would not recommend to do it, if you have never done it before. You can succeed, but I'll guarantee you, that you will scratch your watch on the first attempts

Yeah I can imagine, at that price it would be pretty mad!!
Im in favour of saving up for the new Ceramic model. Feel if I'm going to go for one, intend keeping it forever and wearing it regular then go for a mint or new one! and fully bond with it! Looks wise the Ceramic one really does look the business (to me anyhow)
To chime in on the date or no date. I need a watch with a date. I just need to know if I'm writing a note or something. Some might argue that the date along with the time is kept on a cellphone. But I need the date on my watch. It's just a quick glance to find the information I need. I feel that the Omega Seamaster I own does a pretty good job of using the date and having lume at the 3 o'clock position. The Rolex versions I've seen (Submariners & Sea Dwellers) substitute the lume for the date leaving a dark area at nighttime. Using the bezel for the date is a good idea but it will get old turning the bezel for date function everyday. Plus, I use my bezel as a timer on occasion.
Someone started a thread on a Certina Diver watch that has the date between the 4 and 5 o'clock positions I think. That seems like a nice option over replacing the lume as it keeps all the dial markers the same size.
Well after the great response to my Q's here, a hell of a lot of researching, many nights torn between different models and the influence of photography here (cheers Bondtoys) and the Rolex forums I finally have paid and am awaiting delivery of my Sub!!
I decided to wait a couple of paydays and go brand new as I intend to keep this watch forever or at least the next 30 years, however I managed to get VAT off from a nice UK Jeweller who was kind to send overseas which was a big saving for me!!!
I bought my Seamaster Co-Axial preowned and I couldn't really "bond" with it for some reason or other - maybe as it was not brand spanking new and I did not experience the "magic" of getting and opening a new luxury watch on that occasion.
I think I'm going to be blown away and can't wait for it to arrive!!!!

It would be stupid for Rolex NOT to hike prices. They can, they did and they will do it again!

There was something drawing to me with regards to the ceramic bezel, love the way the light reflects off it!
Hopefully this time next week it should be here on my wrist!!! Xmas will be early for me this year
Ha yes - well I fully intend to wear it daily, def not going to baby it leaving it at home in a box!!!
