is that both of them ?
So if the game is good, bad or indifferent I'd love to know -{
I picked up the game for Xbox 360 last week and have spent several hours with it.
Graphically, the game is something of a mixed bag. The outdoor environments aren't too bad (especially the Siberian level in the snow) but all the indoor areas are a little too visibly angular and rectangular in form. The character models move fluidly but have a blocky look to them up close with minimal texturing. Overall it looks like an uprezzed Wii game (which, come to think of it, is pretty much what it is). None of the characters look like their movie counterparts, most likely due to licensing reasons. While I really don't mind this, I could have done without Ouromov's ridiculous uniform full of medals and Zuchovsky's tattooed punk look. Onatopp also has a freakish hairdo and all the women walk around like they had been clubbed in the kneecaps. The brief views of Craig are typically expressionless ( just like in real life )
The level design is different from the original game, and the movie that inspired it, so while you get familiar setpieces like dropping into the bathroom upside down, how you get there is different. Personally, I don't mind this as a 100% remake of the original would be kind of pointless. There are also multiple paths in each level so you're given some variety in how to approach them.
In terms of gameplay, the enemy AI is inconsistent; there are times where you can walk right up to an enemy and they won't even notice you while at other times, they become alerted to your presence even if you're crouched and out of direct view. The game employs an auto-aim that improves accuracy a lot and makes taking down enemies much easier (some might say too easy); it can be turned off. There is quite a selection of weapons but they all boil down to variations on a handful of categories: pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles and automatic weapons. It would be nice if you could use some of the special weapons in the single player game. The game also has a lot of scripted quicktime events (ie: press LEFT TRIGGER when prompted to perform an on-screen action).
While there are some on rails sections where you shoot while the computer drives, there appear to be no true driving levels in the game; there were none in the original Goldeneye but since other aspects of the game were changed I don't see why a few could not have been added in to spice things up. Your only gadget appears to be your cellphone, which has some augmented abilities but isn't particularly interesting to use.
Its pretty easy to get thru the primary objectives in each level but the secondary ones are somewhat annoying since the relatively low-res graphics often make it hard to spot their locations. After a while, I found myself ignoring those secondary objectives (especially as you aren't really rewarded for them anyway) and focusing on just getting thru the levels.
In terms of multiplayer, there are a lot of modes but public matches can be somewhat frustrating until you level your character up since the game doesn't do a good job of matching up players of comparable experience levels. In my first online matches I was regularly dropped into games with players who had 20-30 times more XP than I did so they of course did proportionally more damage and were harder to take down. Private matches with friends would probably be a more fun experience.
Overall, there's a lot to see and do but it could have been better visually, offered a few more gameplay modes and a more balanced online experience.
My score 7/10
My pleasure Darenhat; waiting for a price drop probably isn't a bad idea. I happened to get it as part of a buy 2 get 1 free deal at Target last week so I can't complaint too much about what I paid for it.
It is too bad that when it comes to Bond games, publishers seem to rely a little too much on the license. Compare any of the Bond games released on next-gen consoles to other franchises like Call of Duty, Gears of War or Uncharted and Bond lags way behind in terms of production values and gameplay mechanics. The Bond games have really become cookie cutter experiences and, much like the movies, just don't stand out from the crowd like they once did.
I hope that Activision puts more thought into thier next Bond or else I will pass on buying it. Still, I am glad that I purchased the game for the Wii as it still fun to play and the multiplayer is pretty decent for what it is.
Thanks Sir Miles; I should amend my views to note that I have come across a driving level loosely based on the tank chase (though in the game you get to take out a fair chunk of St. Petersburg). Hopefully there will be another at some point, maybe with the Z3.
No need to thank me at all....I'm only a casual gamer so I don't feel the need to rush out and buy the latest games at top prices...I'm more than happy to wait 6 months and for the price to drop....and it's great reading reviews on here...it helps me in making some choices and therefore wasting my money -{
The final battle with 006 was, disappointingly, another one of those quicktime sequences where you just press buttons as they displayed on the screen which was somewhat unsatisfying.
Overall a fun game but like so many of the recent Bond games it simply didn't do enough to stand out from the crowd.
Not sure if Game Spot will ship to the UK, but you might check.
