Who could have played the role of "M"?

I was thinking Julie Andrews or Angela Lansbury.

Who could still be "M", Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan.

I always thought Anthony Hopkins would have made a good choice. Probably because he sort of reminds me of Bernard Lee.

Anthony Hopkins was actually hired for Tomorrow Never Dies to play the villain. He walked off the set after 3 days because the production was so chaotic. Many production problems.

Hmm, not sure that's true is it? I understood he wasn't hired, but the director unwittingly talked him out of it by saying they were going to rework the script - which Hopkins liked. At that point alarm bells started ringing about the nature of the production and he didn't proceed with it, added to which he'd recently played a media mogul in some rubbish film, can't recall the name.

I always thought they should have tried Connery. The idea always appealed to me, and we could finally have a steely "M" again, who most certainly could have a naval background. I have really tired of Dench's M which never really worked for me to begin with.

Bernard Lee can never be supplanted, but Fleming's characterization is quite clear.

David Jason, Brit comedy actor. In real life he does have something of the officer class about him, as I saw him being interviewed the morning after Ronnie Barker's death. He would also make an excellent Skudder from 39 Steps, that said so would Bernard Lee in the Robert Powell film. Lee was another actor who started off playing more working class types, below deck types you might say.

Only thing about Jason is, when Bond screws up and M goes mad at him, it would sound like 'Rodney you plonker!!!'

Helen Mirren would make an interesting M. Agree with hegottheboot regarding Connery, but perhaps just a few years too late now.

I always though Julian Fellows would of made a Great M, and becaues he's mainly a writer now I doubt he'd want to do long scenes all over the world. So we could get Back to M simply setting up the target for Bond.

I agree.

Bernard Lee's M was the best interpretation of the character out of all other actors who have played the character. I would like for whoever the new M is, to be somewhat similar to Fleming's characterisation. M is, first of all, a naval veteran (and a man to boot!).

I liked Dench in GE but it quickly palled, and by now is an unwelcome interference.

Who could have played the role of "M"?
