This is good because all of the Pierce Brosnan films in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's were action and formula getting in the way of storytelling and plot.

Where as, QOS was a huge leap forward in storytelling and Plot driven by Characters.
Well, I wouldn't say that Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were Shakespeare, but they certainly had more weight behind their stories than all four of Pierce Brosnan's Bond outings.

Sarcasm. I like it!
A Bond film sans action. You'd definitely have to get away from Fleming to do that.
Well, you know, in the first Bond novel I don't think James even threw a single punch at anybody let alone killed anyone but maybe you were reading a different book than I was.

If you leave out the car chase, torture and assignations
I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about James Bond killing somebody in the Casino Royale novel....Which he had only done so, in flashbacks. It never happened in the novel, during the present day course of the story.

Compared to what they did for QoS, cutting back is relatively no big deal. Craig said himself that the action stuff only got so frequent because they couldn't have actual writing come in due to the strike and that he felt it was a bit much for him physically. I would gladly take a Casino Royale level of action over QoS if it means a better movie.
A little less action and a little more substance would be welcome. That said, Bond was sort of the first action film as we know it today - so we still need the formula. Actually, that's what's entirely missing IMO. There is no formula anymore...

Absouletly agree the Formulas gone, we now seem to have a series of directors with little or no experience of action/thrillers But who are high profile. Mabey the producers feel Bond needs to go a little more up market, ( Trying for those oscars or a few BAFTAs at least) with the likes of ( If True) Judi Dench and Albert Finney, Now they're bound to get some long scenes in the movie, Because after all It was always M and some High Civil Servant in long Discussions that made me go see a Bond Movie.
I think it also lays to rest the idea that QOS was a big hit and made a sack full of cash, If it had they wouldn't be slashing the budget, there is a thought with many that QOS was infact ( depending on whos figures you believe) the First Bond to Lose Money. :v
With the up coming Press junket for "Skyfall" I wonder if we'll hear it's to Be Craigs Last outing, ( Pulling on all the Accadeny's Heart strings, Bound to be good for a BAFTA as best actor,at Least. after missing out with CR? ) )
Is the new Bourne Movie out before it, give the Producers a chance to get a few new ideas for "Skyfall" and we could see what they have in mind for it. )

Budget $200.000.000,- aprox. , worldwide gross $575,952,505. It didn't earn as much as Casino Royale but nobody lost money on QoS, that's clear. If you don't like the movie, fine... But don't talk nonsense please...
Don't think EON is after Oscars (I do believe they feel the Bond films have been unfairly snubbed over the years and would love to get one) I think they are after $$$$$$ and expanding their audience and keeping their franchise viable in today's crowded action film market. Which is why I think all these rumours are probably rubbish. That being said, there could be some truth to Mendes deciding to cut some scenes (possibly action... or not) that he believes weigh down the film, are not a good fit etc. Happens all the time in preproduction. As for a smaller budget...a huge budget does not always translate into a better film. QOS cost more than CR but it's not nearly as good a film IMO. The casting of Albert Finney (if true) IMO has no correlation to Bond 23 being some sort of "art film" with Oscar aspirations. Finney has been in loads of "commercial" films and who knows how much screen time he may even have.

It's annoying, when people think they know what's best for Bond, because of some stupid formula, they love so much. They want filmmakers to adhere to some tired old formulaic plot points because that's what they want but what they don't realize is that what's best for them might not be what's best for everybody else. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

You see, it very much depends on how you define action.
The recent Drive scarcely has an action scene in it, okay maybe two, but is always gripping and involving. You want to know what happens next. Ditto Pulp Fiction, there is always something going on yet there's no car chases or any of that.
It's just too obvious in recent films that they have to have the action scene in at certain points so the audience can tick it off, just in case the plot or character falls down for the rest of the movie. It's a failsafe.
Hey, Failsafe, not a bad name for a movie though it would get the punning critical backlash I suppose.
