There is general resemblance, but Craig has a more stoic range of expressions than Steve McQueen, who had a different kind of charisma, ever did. If you want to see the inspiration for Craig's look, just check out the chase scene from The Great Escape. He wears virtually the same clothes in the airport scene in Casino Royale, and has a similar appearance on the motorbike in Quantum of Solace.
I'm not a great fan of McQueen, but the clear difference is this: he knew how to put himself across to be a 'star'. That included going thru a script and taking out huge swathes of dialogue, saying he could do it with just one look. That may annoy scriptwriters who are paid by the word, but it makes sense. Sometimes just one look is enough to seal your stardom, but I'm not sure Craig has really nailed it, he still wants to be a character actor.
What's more, you can put McQueen on a poster and it looks great, I mean that Bullitt poster is quite a forerunner of today's posters, cos it has just him on it, unlike many of the time which had ovedone artwork with a Mad Mad Mad Mad World look to it. Craig can look okay, but often enough doesn't, so lacks that iconic edge.
Re Steve McQueen, it looks like Jeremy Renner is going to play Steve McQueen in the up coming Biopic.
I always thought Damian Lewis could pull it off too.
Always got the McQueen vibe from Lewis, whereas I never saw it in Craig.
Lewis has McQueen's easy going natural casual coolness down, whereas Craig is more intense.
Always thought Damien Lewis would have made a great Bond, as you said has a natural coolness and could have pulled of the one liners very well.
Absolutely loved him in Homeland, probably the best tv programme in years.
Big fan of Damien Lewis also. Knew him from "Band of Brothers" and had no idea he was British at that time. Lewis does Americans better than most Americans. Very fine actor. Could see him as Bond.
Agree "Homeland" is a fantastic show; just really keeps you on the edge of your seat and you never know where the story is going to take you.
Re: Jeremy Renner as Steve McQueen in a biopic: Renner, while charismatic on the screen IMO is even much more of a charactor actor and less of a leading man type than Daniel Craig. I guess he could pull it off, but I just don't see it looks-wise.

Lewis' character on that show has got to be one of the most complex ever written. Only an actor of Damien Lewis' ability could pull something like that off.

Casino Royale did earn more money at the premiere week in UK than any other movie noticed before.... So I think he is a pretty succesfull actor and I think he is loved by a big audience. But he is maybe not an icon as SM. But remember you only becoming an icon after your death, especially if you get an early and mystical one. And I certainly do not hope Craig gets one.

True, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was an exact copy of the swedish original version of the film, no big differences between the versions. A real dissapointment, cause Fincher was the director!
Craig is for the time stuck in the Bond franschise, personally I think of him as the best actor to portay Flemings Bond yet and I hope he will do it for a long time. I think he will get his big acting break threw when he will stop acting as Bond. After all he is a brilliant actor! -{

I like Craig as Bond...not very concerned about his career outside of the Bond franchise.

It seems that Craig's main interest is in working with quality directors (Mendes, Spielberg, Sheridan, Fincher) in what Craig probably thinks are quality projects. Most are "art house" type productions that probably aren't going to generate a bunch of money. Aliens and Cowboys is a notable exception but he fell into that part because Downey Jr. withdrew and Bond 23 was on hold.

I think on the points made by Gala Brand at #927 and Thunderpussy at #928, Craig is an indie, small buget kind of guy at heart and from his acting background. Look at FLASHBACKS OF A FOOL; total rubbish, sure, and probably should never have been made, but it shows where Craig's heart lies.
And yet Craig's lifestyle and financial requirements demand the big budget, franchise films. Principal has to be scacrificed to bring in the cash, schlepping to the dollar sign. Tom Ford, Lanvin, etc, homes in New York and London don't come cheap.
