Seems a chaeper idea to get one of these: http://www.swaineadeney.co.uk/products/bond_a/index.html and get the rest customised.

At least you end up with a much better quality case.

You could, but the original Connery Swaine Adeney attaché case was thin (as seen in Dr. No). The prop case was thicker to accommodate the gadgets. You could buy the thicker Swaine Adeney, but then how would you house the gadgets? If it were me, I'd just buy the thin Swaine Adeney and be done with the joke. It was the model the prop makers used to make the the gadget case. The Swaine Adeney attaché case was a Bond prop, it just did not house the gadgets.

yeah good luck with that. i've seen the SD case up close and from seeing how its made you're far better off starting again from scratch. bit like duskie's golden gun project, i think he'll find that a scratch build will be far easier in the same kinda (pardon the pun) case as the, er, case.

DG, Geff, thanks for your feedback.

I was merely trying to put into perspective the value of the SD case compared with a craftsman-made case like the Swaine Adeney original.

I have absolutely no intention of buying one to canibalise it - the FRWL case and its contents are of no interest to me and remind me of the toy "James Bond" case I had as a kid.

That said, I'm sure most would argue that the SD case was equally craftsman-made. It's just not for me.

not trying to defend the seller, but judging the SD Studios attache by its craftmenship is pretty nonsense.

It's a rare collectible, which is not available anymore. It will always be the first one, which has tried to capture all the gadgets and that will last. The number of these in collector's hand is very low and you won't find many collectors, who are willing to part with theirs at all. And these have their mind right and can appreciate a nice and rare replica.

Arguing about it's craftmanship-value is like judging the TF clothing by the raw cotton or wool prices or buying an Omega just because of the scrap value 8-)

Well, I was more refering to 'craftsmanship' in the case of the SD case being Damasco (sp?) following the original plans that he managed to get hold of to make the case work with the gadgets, ensuring it had the amazing appeal to collectors that it has had. :)

It's apparent from comments made by several respected and knowledgable (don't let my flattery go to your heads, guys!) members on here that the price being asked is at least in the ball park of a correct valuation for the case, but I am curious...how much did this sell for when it first came out? And when was that? Am I right in assuming that this has turned out to be one of the best investments ever when it comes to Bond limited edition collectables?

I think it was 1500 when it came out, two versions if I remember right. Don't think it sold too well, then again neither did the Golden Gun at the time.

Just to quantify before i get flamed - the GG was a limited edition of 7500 which sold maybe 20% of that.

I would imagine that the company making the new Bond replicas will be looking at producing the briefcase soon themselves.

The world of mass produced, mass market appeal Bond props is very limited. There are only so many Jaws teeth the market can take and if it is a Bond replica prop you are after then surely it must therefore be irrelevant who actually produces it.

For a Bond prop collector it is the look and the accuracy and if need be functionality that matters rather than a limited edition number.

Talking of functionality a very moot point is the replica many times can exceed the real prop in quality and function.

Value of an S.D. case - well it was a pretty low volume run and so if you want one where can you buy one tomorrow, my definition of rare!

I always felt the talc tin let the case replica down

It is a toy, although for a mature audience and therefore I' m sure it will find a new home.

Wow that is high. But it is rare. Glad I still have mine! As I said in another thread, it's the King of all Bond props:
