PHYSICAL
• I train in and teach mixed-martial arts, Kali, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kali—a Filipino art largely dealing with stick and knife fighting—is my real martial passion. I can (and have!) stick fight for hours.
• I'm a certified trainer, and love to work-out myself. Most of my training involves kettlebells and body weight stuff like chin-ups, dips, and Hindu push-ups and squats.
• Generally speaking, I do something physical every day of the week.

MENTAL
• I read voraciously. For fiction, I enjoy American detective novels, especially the work of Robert B. Parker and Robert Crais. I also like more literary works, such as the novels of Haruki Murakami.
• My nonfiction tastes are very broad. Some key areas of interest: history, the arts, philosophy (mostly existentialism and Zen), politics, animal issues.
• I also read a few periodicals regularly, such as The New Yorker, Harper's, Utne Reader, Men's Health, and The Nation.

THE ARTS
• I love movies, especially older, classic fare, foreign films, and quirkily, offbeat stuff. I also really like well-done, smart action movies, though those can be rare!
• My musical tastes are all over the place, which is no doubt why I have over 1,000 albums. Main genres: classical, jazz, classic rock, postpunk/goth, trip-hop/electronica.

CULINARY
• WIne. Beer. Gin. Bourbon. Tea. Vegetarian and vegan food.

COLLECTING
• I don't really collect anything.

CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT
• Television, sports, and video games. Zero interest in any of them.

I like to read. Since I was a child I have loved history and I read a lot on the subject. Ancient Rome and 20th century history are perhaps my favourites. I also find that good biographies not only teaches me about one perticular colourful person, but also the time and place he/she lived in. Often I read fiction too. Cormac McCarthy, Jo Nesbø, John Irving, Alan Furst, Stephen Saylor, Ernest Hemingway etc.
I'm also a film buff. i like many of the classics, but I aslo watch many modern films. Some of the movies are "arty", but I'm not the type of film buff who dislike a movie because the general public likes them.
I'm also a member a of a small pistol club, but I havent invested in my own gun yet. Probably I'll buy myself a 22lr this summer.

If you're buying a .22 pistol give the GSG 1911 a go. Solidly constructed, lovely feel and great all round quality. I've just bought a UK legal model with false suppressor to cover the longer barrel, and it's fantastic. What's more, Colt 1911 accessories fit and this means they can be customised limitlessly.

German Sports Guns. I have their GSG 5 as well. A copy of the Heckler & Koch mp5 machine gun. Now that is a seriously fun gun to play with on the range!

That's the GSG 5 minigeff, the 1911 is away having a custom trigger and topslide fitted.

The GSG5 is semi-auto, with 22 round magazines. You can empty a mag in about 4 to 5 secs. It's an extremely accurate little gun and good for 1" groupings at 100 yds with the right sight, but best at 50 yds with the three option standard turret sights. The shoulder stock is retractable, and I sometimes use a red-dot 1x40 wide angle sight for practical/combat competitions... Or just for bunnies.

thats pretty sweet, thanks for taking the time to post a pic. i've seen these things at various websites, and was talking to a local guy who knows everything you'd need to about guns. he was saying that it was well worth going the extra 150 quid and getting a sig sauer 522 instead, as he'd heard the gsg stuff was quite crudely made and suseptable to jams.

now im certainly not saying that your gun is crap, i couldnt possibly pass judgement as i haven't used a gsg personally, and i know that opinon can vary massively, and is often based on only a few people's experience, ya know the thing where a couple of people complain and all of a sudden the whole brand is labelled as crap.

so whats your experience with the gsg? had any jam issues? is it happier with some brands of ammo, or can ya put anything through it with reletive ease? it'd be cool to hear your personal experience with it.

also the 1911, i take it that its basically a 1911 copy in .22, with a permanent shoulder stock on, i'm assuming welded or cast into the pistol's frame, but does it cycle like a regular semi-auto pistol?

on a final note, i'd hate to be paying your ammo fee!

I think German Sports guns came under a lot of unfair scrutiny because their roots are in airsoft. To me that's like saying Honda shouldn't make sportsbikes because they make good lawnmowers. They were sued by Heckler and Koch, and had to change a few things and the name of the gun. Ive used H&K MP5's and there is no difference in quality IMO. I have put through over a thousand rounds through it and it works extremely well. Ammo has been a problem though. It doesn't work well on subsonics or anything with soft lead bullets. Now that I've worked out what's good in it, it really doesn't jam at all. In fact, I think the action is so well made, that subsonic recoil just isn't enough to work the parts that's all. And the chamber is quite squared off, so soft lead is not the best. Having said that, I use a Ruger 10/22 and that too suffers from low velocity, soft lead stoppages as well. Jacketed rounds always work better in semi-autos.
There are a few of these guns on the market now, and in reality they are all toys compared to something custom like Southern Gun Company's reworked AR platforms, but then you won't get change out of £1200 for one of those. At £440, at the time of purchase, I think the GSG is right up there. Smith and Wesson and Heckler and Koch now do .22 versions, but are around £700 with extras. Neither look or feel any different to me, and both suffer from being finicky with ammo, from what I've observed. Horses for courses really. You either NEED one of these or you don't.

The GSG 1911 is very well made. And I mean up there with Colt 1911 .45's. It works well with all high-velocity stuff, and hasn't jammed up with subsonic soft lead hollow points either. I like using these rounds on my land because they're nice and quiet and SO19 don't come out in force when you do a bit of hedgerow target practice! I'm having a new trigger assembly and topslide fitted, target rear adjustable sights and soft moulded rubber grips put on, so will be without it for a week or two.
