I'm sure the introduction to stirring a martini, was due to the fact that Gin can 'bruise' - I'm no expert in this, but when I did a stint behind a cocktail bar... I'm sure I heard that....
As Bond likes Vodka martinis, I don't think it matters... although shaking, in my opinion, will make the cocktail colder, quicker, with less opportunity for the ice to melt... and consequently water down the drink. -{
As for what is being said in this article though, is that using a metal spoon, to stir a martini, will conduct more heat, rather than a wooden stirrer. A simple solution to this, would be to store the stirrer in a cool place, and then the metal stirrer would be colder.... but that seems like a far too easy solution
I have had martinis shaken and stirred and frankly I couldn't tell the difference. Your idea about cooling the metal spoon makes a lot of sense. There was a bar in Memphis that used a glass rod to stir drinks.

But from what I can see/hear they are tasting a normal martini with gin not a vodka-martini. I always learned you should stir a martini and shake a vodka-martini. I wonder why they didn't pick up on the fact that Bond always orders a 'vodka-martini shaken not stirred'
