Transcendental Meditation

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience about TM. I used to know someone who practiced it, and from what I understand, it's not worth paying for their course, as you basically sit and repeat a mantra (like «coca cola») for 20 minutes.

It seems fishy to me as there is not meta-analysis that has proved that there are scientific benefits, all of the studies are very suspicious or funded by TM people. But still, meditation is an old practice, and perhaps there is something to it...

Does anyone here either do it or know someone who does it?

EDIT: http://minet.org/mantras.html

I also found this website, which is supposed to be a chart to construct their supposed mantras that are supposed to be unique to you. If you did TM, maybe you can confirm if the charts works or not.

EDIT : For those who don't know, it costs 1500$ to learn TM... this is why it's fishy. (And then, they have plenty of money to fund research about it..)

Anything that lowers heart rate and blood pressure has entrancing abilities. It's usually achieved through individual knowledge of self. (Try not to take that the perverse way as I'm sure some may do :)) ) It can be achieved easily by emptying your mind working towards mental equilibrium, you have probably done it before without knowing. Therefore, it certainly shouldn't require a $1500 price tag.

I don't believe TM is complete bollocks even though I have no interest. George Harrison was a strong advocate and spent many hours chanting mantras. He always came across to me as a perfectly reasonable and intelligent man.

I'm actually trying this out right now.

Last night I had some pasta, 2 glasses of coke, a whole pack of co-op onion ring crisps, chocolate, some squishy sweets and a slice of cheesecake.

This morning, sat atop my throne I'm now reciting the manta 'oh god oh god oh god' while my souls expunges itself.

My old next door neighbour used to practise TM too, but she did her chanting late at night, must have been yogic flying at the same time by the banging noise she made while chanting 'yes' very loudly.

My old boss teaches this stuff. (He used to be a business marketer, which is when I worked for him :D)

He's written 2 books about it - The Miracle Self, and The Giving Self.
It's on the principle that you can reach the infinite self by emptying the mind... and being in a state of 'nothingness' - which then helps you re-connect with the universe.

To some it sounds like bollocks, but to other's it's very stress relieving, and helps bring good things into your life.

Books like Dan Brown's latest covers this very topic, as does the 'The Celestine prophesy' - (over 23 million copies sold :o)

I do think that in today's world of information overload... and this constant need for mental stimulation - being able to let go, and just BE can only a good thing. People do this in many ways.... and they call it many things.

I think there is enough information out there, that how to do, or practice this stuff shouldn't come at a hefty price tag.
However, that's not the fault of the seller, but rather the buyer! :))

Well said, Lex. The human mind is an amazing thing...capable of much more than most realize. Last year I spent some time with a woman who is fairly accomplished at certain meditative methods...and I am a believer, to a degree.

To empty the mind isn't so hard. Most people I meet at work seem to have done this quite successfully... :#

Yes, Transcendental Meditation is a great thing. You could consider the course fee an investment in our own health and well-being. There are numerous studies on TM that show its benefits. It is easy to learn and simple to do. You need to learn it through personal instruction form a certified teacher. You can find a teacher near you at www.TM.org. Good luck and I hope you do it.

Actually there are meta-analyses TM research funded by the US government (national institutes of health) and medical research orgs. Check out: http://www.tm.org/national-institutes-of-health.
Personally, TM is worth the price because it works! My life is stronger and happier. Sure you can find an inexpensive one size fits all meditation class elsewhere, but the TM course is professional and profound. Quality and lifelong support when you want it is worth the price.

Please allow me to doubt the fact that both of you just joined today and it's your first post and there is 5 minutes difference between your posts.

Do you see what I mean by : TM has so much money... It's actually crazy what they can do with it.

I am actually scared that they would find out so quick about a thread about it and comment twice... feels like Scientology to me... (and they have celebrities too)
