Who is getting one?

Same thing for the Mac OS. They sell it 30$ but there is never real improvements. Just little things. I think they'll have trouble in the future. Once everyone has an iPad 5, they'll be tired and will need something really new to change.
Personally, I thought the intro of the iPad HD or whatever its called, was a little anticlimactic. The new features were so modest that Apple didn't even feel justified giving it a new number. It seems to me like they felt obligated to announce something rather than having something meaningful to announce.
I tend to stick with Android devices; I find they have all the functionality of Apple's IOS while being more open, versatile and significantly less expensive (just got a Droid X2 smartphone for one penny; hard to beat that price). They may not be as intuitive but I prefer tinkering around to Apple's excessive hand-holding approach.
I'm also pretty sure IOS doesn't support live wallpapers and I can't stand the thought of giving up my animated aquarium wallpaper.
Well I was thinking along similar lines today, however when you think about it hard - its a little unfair on Apple to expect a ground breaking product every year. Over the last 5 years we really have been spoilt, iPhone launched which turned the cell phone world upside down, Macbook Air (although not for long made most people stunned) and of course the iPad which has created a tablet market which for years was tried and failed!
They will of course improve on these products every year however like you say - where do they go next???? Prob unlikely for a long time that we will see a completely "new" product.
Software wise there is a lot to improve on for iOS devices (some very basic functions missing), you still can't attach a pic to a email - you have to open pic first or copy and paste the pic in after!
My problem with iPads is that I just don't see the point. We have had an iPad in the house since Christmas (not mine, a present for someone else) and I am no longer able to see the point of it. With regard to functionality, there is nothing that the iPad can do that my 4 year old laptop can't do just as quickly. The only thing the iPad is quicker at is powering on, but to be honest I don't mind waiting an extra 30-40 seconds.The iPad also seems a little limited due to it being locked to Apple's operating system which is very slick and responsive but it is just so restrictive.
If I were to get a tablet for any reason, I think I would go for an android device. I know they aren't as good in terms of performance, but this is outweighed for me by the open source nature of the operating system.
So far, I have refused to buy one but for surfing on the couch, it seems to be an appropriate tool.
So far, I am using my Macbook Air for that purpose, but the battery is flat after 3 1/2 hours.
On the other hand - nothing can replace a real keyboard.

You hit the nail on the head, as Steve Jobs originally said its really a "Device for consumption not creation "
If your a "power" user then of course it is frustrating to be locked into the iOS system and best get yourself a Macbook etc however this is not really what the iPads about.
Ive upgraded to the iPad 3 however I've also just bought an iPad 2 for my Mother's birthday. She is just learning to use a desktop and also all about email and the Internet which is a struggle for her coming from a good old fashioned typewriter. Anyhow navigating through windows etc and all that pratting about is daunting for her (you should see her mouse control
Its of course an awesome device for pratting around on in bed, sofa, traveling etc and if your a kid (like me) you will love it for the games, movies and social networking etc My young nephew sold his laptop last year as like my mother it covers all the basics well and the games are starting to become impressive for kids.
My main computer is a Mac Pro however I also have a Macbook Air 11" to take back and forth to the office and work on weekends (got to be the best laptop I've ever had, I'm actually on my second). When the iPad 1 came out I ditched my Macbook Air however soon learnt the iPad cannot replace that of my work needs, which work consists mainly of prating around with Excel etc. At home though there is something I love about using an iPad rather then pratting around with a laptop on your lap etc
I think people are underestimating the iPad 3 upgrade though, the screen on the iPad 2and Macbook Air annoys the hell out of me as I'm used to the quality of the iPhone 4 retina, this iPad 3 has 4 x as many pixels - its going to be stunning and should have a pretty hefty engine too.
All in all its of course a luxury item and I understand why people would prefer to use a laptop for any serious work with a keyboard, for entertainment though in a tiny package it is a killer. It will be very interesting to see where Apple go from here, now on generation 3 - hardware wise it now seems to have everything people wanted, I think they need to work on the software side now and maybe improve the productivity.
If as rumored Microsoft Office is coming then it may poss have a huge impact if the user interface is killer. Ive heard it will only be for Microsoft tablets and Apple tablets in a bid to do some damage to Google and Android platform.
PS - im glad they are getting away from USB ports and all that crap and I am loving this cloud technology! Im using dropbox for my files etc and love the fact that my Mac & Macbook Air are kept in sync automatically. When I'm out and about with my phone (or away with the iPad) I can log into drop box and view my work anywhere in the world, man we have come some way over the last 10 years! Surprised Apple has not bought Drop Box, its so damn fast and seamless it makes Mobile Me / iCloud look ****!!
I think Apple will have to pull out something real special for iPhone 5. Now they have bought several mapping companies they really should start improving Maps and poss have their own SatNav system.
They seem to be complicating things in the App department too, the recent iPhoto app is very nice but feel it should eventually replace "Photos"
I have not touched an Android device now for a few years, what features are they ahead on at the moment??
In terms of functions, I'm not really sure to be honest. I currently use an Android phone but come November when I upgrade, I think I will be getting a new iPhone. On a phone I don't mind iOS at all and the broader range of apps and games is appealing. Also, as I listen to a lot of podcasts, it's nice to have iTunes on the fly. If I were to get a tablet, however, I would prefer Android due to it being open source and more customisable.
I also own a Macbook Air 11'' - without a doubt the best Laptop that I've ever owned.
Still looking forwards for my first iPad - but I admit that the "must-have factor" is much higher for me than I really need it!
