Activision announced this morning that 007 Legends is coming this fall for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game ties together six classic James Bond movies as well as the upcoming film, Skyfall:
To celebrate the James Bond franchise's 50th anniversary, Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc., will launch gamers back through time to relive a selection of Bond's most iconic and intense undercover missions from the popular Bond film franchise with 007™ Legends.
A first-of-its-kind Bond video game, 007 Legends features an original, overarching storyline tying together six classic Bond movies, concluding with this year's highly-anticipated 23rd installment - SKYFALL - to offer the most diverse Bond gaming experience yet! As with the feature films, 007 Legends equips players with state-of-the-art spy gadgets, an arsenal of weapons, including Bond's signature Walther PPK, and sleek vehicles as they jet off to exotic locations and utilize Bond's quick wits, class and style to take down notorious villains and their brutal henchmen, perform impressive stunts, and of course...mingle with gorgeous Bond women.
"To honor 50 years of the world's top secret agent, 007 Legends offers a collection of his most famed moments in the smartest and most treacherous Bond game yet," said David Oxford, Executive Vice President at Activision Publishing, Inc. "Creating a video game storyline that ties together six popular, yet very different, Bond movie narratives can be challenging, but together with EON Productions, our developer Eurocom, has pulled it off to create an homage that we think will be a unique and highly entertaining Bond video game."
In addition to 007 Legends' main story, the game will feature the return of fan-favorite single-player Mi6 Ops Missions, which debuted in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded and challenges players to complete extra missions ranging from all-out action to stealth and gadget-based gameplay and compete for the highest online leader board scores. For the first time ever, players will be able to participate as one of Bond's cohorts or villainous foes, reliving the missions through their eyes, as well as 007's. The robust James Bond multiplayer experience includes local four-player split-screen game modes and online competitive gameplay with new maps, weapons and characters derived from Bond's 50 year legacy. With more gadgets, deeper stealth and spy investigation gameplay, gamers will have every opportunity to truly feel like the world's favorite spy.
Planned to launch this fall, 007 Legends is being developed by Eurocom, under license from EON Productions Ltd. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. (MGM) for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

I wonder if they decided against it because a dedicated game would mean a year or less of time to create the whole film as a game, whereas they would be allowed a more traditional development time of 18-30 months if they started off early using films in existence over the 50 years. Movie games are usually rushed because they need to wait for the film producers to finalize and forward the things being shot in the film to the game developer which means they don't get the crucial base info to start making levels until it is too late to make them great.
This way means most of the levels could be done before SkyFall's production because the older films' materials are readily available. That leaves a more breezy attempt at making levels based off SkyFall when they don't have much time left once they get the info.
Can't remember the timing of the classic Goldeneye game to the movie release. That turned out ok, and had a few film elements in it mixed in with generic backgrounds. But that was stone age technology compared to nowadays.
Yeah, Goldeneye was simpler. There are a lot more elements to work on and bigger teams to manage these days.
I really hope that Activision is making a version of this for the Wii or the forthcoming WiiU console, as I enjoyed the remake of Goldeneye and would like another James Bond video game to play.
I don't see the point of Wii U yet. So far it seems like almost every title for it will have already come out on PS3 and 360 by the time it gets to Wii U and no major launch exclusives have been announced for it yet. It honestly confuses me how so many people keep talking about it like it is worth getting when it comes out this fall without any evidence of great killer apps or new offerings.
GoldenEye N64 came out in 1997, so it potentially had significantly more development time than most movie based games.
Anyway, the only thing I'm worried about is that the parts from older films are going to be "re-imagined" the way that GoldenEye was in Reloaded, which I didn't particularly care for. I'd rather just have independent levels dedicated to the different movies where they are as close to the movies (set in the same time periods of the films, different bond actors, etc) as they can be.
I would like to see one from each actor who has been Bond, but with some like Connery and Moore, since they have the most between them besides the obvious choices, which do you use? Both Goldfinger and golden gun have been used, goldfinger was at the beginning of Rogue Agent as well as the fun house from Golden Gun. three of Brosnan's movies have seen games, all of Craig's have been done, since in Solace you play parts of Casino Royale.
1: Brosnan 2: Craig 3: Moore 4: Dalton 5: Connery and 6: Lazenby
I agree. I am so hoping that Legends refers to the men and not to the stories alone just remained with Craig. As good as Goldeneye Reloaded was on its own, there was a massive audience out there begging for a faithful remake of the original game instead of a new interpretation of the original source story and screenplay.
I want to play at least one level as each Bond using perhaps some dialogue and lines ripped from the films. They could do a magnificent job recreating some scenarios and cutscenes from the old films if they chose to.
Perhaps it could be one level for each of the previous actor's best (or most popular) films, and then 5 or so levels for SkyFall following all those to make a more meaty game and satisfy those interested particularly in SkyFall. Heck, I wouldn't mind another Casino Royale level since I wasn't satisfied with the graphics of the Quantum of Solace game.

Yes, I know thats very pedantic but come on, not very good attention to detail.
* This is the weapon Bond is seen holding in the latest production stills from Skyfall.
I hope they can get the other Bonds in the game, not just DC, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Need two years to make a good game? With this newer strategy, make everything you can without film materials and then you will have 70-80% of the game done and you can pull the last part together when you finally get the scenes and scripts from the film in those last months of development. It is the best way to avoid those crap movie games that tried to be based off the film, but problematically aren't able to get ahold of the source material until those late months when most games should be mostly done.

Its just Craig, no other playable Bond's, such a shame, I thought this would be one of the decent games, instead looks like they are basically forgetting about previous actors but using their storylines in a 'life flashing before eyes' kind of way but re-interpreting them as Craig's Bond's memories.
In my honest opinion this is an insult to the past films and stories, not that i'm a Craig hater but especially as this is supposed to be part of the 50th anniversary celebrations and basically 'ignoring' the previous Bond's is a very upsetting way to celebrate the franchise!
EDIT: Quoted from the website -
"The places and times remain classified, but each retains the look and feel of
the original movies, updated with reimagined characters, expanded gameplay and exciting new plotlines."
basically they are selling it as a game merging classic storylines and characters only to release a synopsis revealing that they will be new plots and 're-imagined' characters, maybe they should ask the fans and ask them if they want classic stories and characters 're-imagined' and 'Daniel Craig-onised', leave them as they were!
- First of all this is a first person shooter. So when people say "I want to play as Craig" or "I want to play as Sean Connery" I scratch my head and think "what do you mean by that?". In Golden Eye Reloaded you saw Craig maybe 1% of the time and occasionally you heard his voice. But in the end it didn't matter because YOU NEVER SAW YOUR CHARACTER!!!!
Sorry ranting ...
- Plopping in skins of known villians and guns is not enough to create that magic of the film. In Golden Eye a whole lot of hype about "you can plan as Hugo Drax", "you ... can ... have ... a... golden .... gun ....". Hu? What? Who cares?
You have to do more with a game to make it feel like Bond. Golden Eye Reloaded was a huuuuge disappointment. I followed the release of that game very closely and what a super let down. Just didn't feel like Bond at all. Not really a stealth game, no gadgets, just a run of the mill FPS. And in 2011 and me being both a Bond fan and a gamer this just wasn't good enough.
Also in GER the multiplayer just never existed. Split screen to relive the old days? Ya no not gonna work for me.
I understand this is a Bond site and everyone is welcome to their opinion so forgive me if I come across kind of harsh. But when I read all the talk I keep thinking "doesn't anyone know we can demand better?".
The Bond IP has been horribly managed from a game offering perspective. I guess I'll go back to playing Blood Stone (for the Bond look and feel) and Batman (for the stealth/gadget game done right) and hope that I am wrong.
Please Eurocom make an ass out of me and proove me wrong. Give the Bond IP a lot of love, make Ledgends a "game of the year". And to the rest of you .... DONT BELEIVE THE HYPE! Demand better!
I'm afraid the reason it is just Craig is due to ££££. Using the other actors image rights would cost loads, this is the reason why Sean Bean etc was not in Goldeneye Reloaded
Yes it was advertised as being a remake, but it was NOT, think of it like what they did with True Grit, they didn't remake the John Wayne classic, they went back to the actual book it came from. Golden Eye Wii and Reloaded are basically the same way. The premise of the Golden Eye story is still there, but it's retold through Daniel Craig's style of 007.
1: Brosnan 2: Craig 3: Moore 4: Dalton 5: Connery and 6: Lazenby
I also don't buy this argument that since the Bond movies have rejected gadgets, the videogames must follow suit. They are two very different genres with different audiences and different expectations. The gadgets in earlier Bond games helped them to stand out from the crowd; whereas the last few games play like generic FPS games and have suffered in the sales department because of it. It also doesn't help that Activision always releases their Bond games during the holidays where they are always overshadowed by more high-profile genres.
Activision has developed a really notorious reputation for being an imaginatively bankrupt, bottom-line only company that takes its franchises and stripmines them for content, releasing new chapters every 12 months without regard for quality and shutting down studios as soon as one of their games fails to meet sales expectations . Their Bond games in particular rely too much on the license while presenting pedestrian action, unimaginative environments and subpar visuals compared to the competition. I'm sure 007 Legends will continue that trend and, like its immediate predecessors, quickly end up in the discount bin.
While I really, really wish they weren't doing this take on the old films with Craig, you are right that Goldeneye Reloaded and now 007 Legends are simply new adaptations of the sources, not intended to actually remake the scenes of the original film adaptations. Thus, remake is not an appropriate term as it suggests they are messing with the previous actor's interpretations most directly. The Amazing Spider-Man due this summer is another example that is getting called a sudden remake when it is really a rather sudden new adaptation of the Spider-Man source stories.
*Sigh* I really had imagined up some great moments playing as Connery, Moore, Brosnan, and Craig with some serious elegance and cinematic scenery from their film outings, but of course that is too much to ask. Can you imagine a nighttime party as Connery in the 60s with a slightly smoky air, and all the classic affluent ladies and gents chatting away as Bond sends his charming glances towards his female target? That's what I wanted, at least.
Now I must accept whatever I will get with the Craig adaptations.
1: Brosnan 2: Craig 3: Moore 4: Dalton 5: Connery and 6: Lazenby
Well, Activision doesn't really avoid spoilers in the games, despite the release dates. The Amazing Spider-Man game comes out before the film and it is known to contain several spoilers about the film. So, see the film before playing the game.
The one thing that may help is that the games are rarely totally faithful to the film scenes and often have many additions, twists, or alternate storylines to try and either add more or better content, or to have additional development time by using an original plot.
Looks like Legends will suffer a similar fate as did GER. Recall GER was release along with BF and COD in 2011. GER did not do well at all with sales and the online multiplayer never really saw the sight of day due to no one showing playing it.

The official site says that you play as Daniel Craig's Bond through classic missions with 're-imagined and all new' plots, or something to that effect, either way I'm not holding out much hope, I didnt like GE:Reloaded at all, was just a generic FPS, not Bond at all, the games have been going the sameway as the films, well QoS anyway, Bloodstone was terrible too! At least EA made an effort, AuF, NightFire and EoN were great, even From Russia With Love had all the elements to make a great game even if it was slightly off the mark. Heck even TND and TWINE had more variety!
