I don't know what the film version did or didn't do, probably mostly cgi but i think minijeffs version is actually better!
Lol, no it wasn't CGI at all CJ (parp).
I've managed to take a look at weno's attempt. Must say its pretty good. However I think it's a bit daft throwing claims of 'the most accurate in the world' around; who's not to say someone else has done it more accurately? How would anyone know which is more accurate? Anyways, there's one are he's got wrong already... I suspect two at least.
Anyways, as for the circuits, his price of $60 for the decoder circuit is actually pretty good. The $50 one for the mine though? Bit steep.
I'm currently working with a guy who does electronics, and his work is STUNNING, it's professional and very high quality. I was making something which he did some work for me, and I'll post a vid sometime soon of it mocked up and working.
You'll be amazed at a) the quality and b) the price, and he's open to commissions
More news soon.
Ps, thanks for the kind words of support, nice to know people like my stuff.
I'm just posting this here as its my only way to respond to 'weno' over on therpf.com, as being a new member means it takes years for my posts to be checked over and added to the forum (daftness incarnate).
Anyhow, weno has taken it upon himself to 'address' some comments 'on another forum' made by some over the validity of the accuracy of his decoder.
I'm assuming that he is referring to my prop as I'm not aware of others being recently made (ed I know you have one) and that weno is meaning ajb. Why he doesn't name names I dunno.
Anyhow, I'd like to make my comment here as there are members who use both forums and I don't want them getting the wrong impression. Since I can't state my case on therpf, I'll do so here. It's relevant to ajb since this is my 'home' as forums go.
In weno's thread he claims that I have made my replica WRONG. (?) specifically;
1) the colour is inaccurate
2) The blinking lights are different
3) His spacing of the keys is right (I assume by this point he means mine is wrong)
4) The LEDs on his are set into individually laser cut holes, not set in a light bar like mine which according to weno is "NOT accurate".
5) The beeping of the original prop was added in post, so weno's doesn't beep either. This bit is all in caps, so I take it he's got real pi$$ed by now.
Anyways, to address his points;
1) my colour is right, his is wrong. It's that simple. Light conditions, tv settings etc etc. it can all change colours to the eye (remember when we thought the QoS DBS was black?).
2) ok, I put my hands up, my blinking lights are not 100% accurate. When you're trying to explain what you need the sparky to program them to do it makes it very hard. I thought the sparky did an ok job.
3) the keys are bought, you can't change the spacing so what he means by this I've no idea.
4) the LEDs are set into light bars. This was how the original was made, I have photographic proof. The original had no laser cut parts on it anywhere. Why?/how do I know? Because back in 1995 laser cutters were hugely expensive machines. The studios do not (by the large if it) supply equipment of this kind to production companies. What's quicker, send off drawings to a company or use a needle file? I used laser cut parts to make it quicker.
5) ok, so the original prop didn't beep, the sound was added in post. But so are many things in film, but ad prop enthusiasts we (or me at least) love it when a replica works as we see and hear it on screen. Using this as an excuse to not put a beeper in is IMO, lame. Can you imagine if FE did a MIB neuralyser that didn't beep or flash?
To sum things up, I personally think making replicas should be done as accurately as you can, using the tools, experience and information available to you. I am EXTREMELY fortunate to have some great friends here who have helped with the info side of things.
For me, it's not about 'his is crap, buy mine'. I would prefer to sell something on how good it is, not how bad someone else's might be.
Which brings me to my final and most important point;
If I was doing a run of door Decoders, and was in 'competition' with this weno guy, I'd still object to his comments, BUT I'd understand them a little more. Since no run of mine is planned, I find it massively rude to 'bash' my attempts at this prop, as there's no real reason to even mention it in his thread over on therpf. I could have offered him help getting his more accurate but he's burnt that bridge. To claim his is 'THE MOST ACCURATE IN THE WORLD' is misleading and daft. He'd sell them anyway without this claim as his replica isn't that bad in all fairness, it just needs a little polishing. But it ain't the most accurate and I wouldn't like to lay claim to that either. Who's not to say there's one out there made using the original for a direct reference? Unlikely perhaps, but not an impossibility. An example is the golden snitch from Harry potter, I know there's a very small run cast from moulds taken off the original prop by the person who made it, so this kinda thing does happen.
Hopefully my words here have addressed any issues and you guys can see where I'm coming from. If you've any comments, post em here so we can all see it, not a pm cos my box is chocka (oh er) and I prefer to be open with these matters.
Cheers for taking the time to read this guys, and as always I appreciate your comments and support,
Well to me the King has spoked, Ed took the original photos at EONs archive back in 96, he has actually held the prop, not only that he tracked the damn parts this thing is made of ( crazy bugger ) , you will notice a few posts back to which he thinks is most accurate nuff said for me
all that being said, I would be in line to buy wieners decoder if I didn't already have one even though it is way to dark )
As it appears that it was me who inadvertently started this flame war, all I can say is that this wasn't the intention. All I want is a fair accurate representation of the decoder. One propmaker couldn't supply a lighting/sound circuit, another could (even though it is subtlety different) I was just letting AJB members know that such a thing was available. I will NOT take sides in this, I don't do politics. I will say that I respect both points of view and don't care who is 'right' as long as I eventually get a circuit to do the job and my prop turns out to MY satisfaction.
I totally agree Andy. I know your intention wasn't to cause trouble, and I'd supply you with a circuit, if only the guy who made mine would do it. Sadly he ain't interested. A new sparky has been found though and I'm more than happy with his work so far. I intend to send my decoder chip to be reprogrammed by him to make the light sequence more accurate.
I'm not getting into a war of words on this, and consider it dealt with. It doesn't offend me in any way that people on here are going for weno's decoder, I'm not doing a run so what alternative do you have? (not sure if ed does these anymore either). Even if I was making these, it's your choice who you go to, that's life and I'm not gonna think twice about forcing people's hand or bad mouthing anyone.
There's definitely no hard feeling from me towards anyone here, and don't feel bad Andy cos I think you've been taken out of context by weno.

This is similar to an arduino board, it can be programmed to do loads of stuff, temp sensor, relay unit, flashy lights, sound effects, timers.....
And the price? £25
