Everyone be safe, it's very hot here in the South and dry, dry, dry, be careful with fire.

Remember what it's all about.

To our British and Commonwealth friends, we are ever mindful, at least most of us, of the sacrifices your countries have also made to preserving the freedoms we enjoy.

While I can't say I support the reasons the US and UK forces are in places like Iraq and Afgahnistan, I am proud of our lads and lasses who dedicate a vast amount of their lives serving queen and country.

I'm not a fan of the politicians who send them to all these sunny vacation spots around the globe, but it must be said that on the whole, our boys and girls have to deal with and witness first hand the most horrific of man's nature.

A few of my friend are, or have served in the forces, and the things they've opened up about have honestly shocked me to the bone. From the Taliban using children as range markers for mortar teams to a pal of mine realising that burnt 'tree' was actually at one point a human being, to another having to wash the remains of his mate from their snatch, to the dad of a friend having his sniffer dog blown up in NI, I honestly don't know if I could deal with the slightest if these situations. I can't even decide which one would be the easy option to take.

Many of my forces mates have been left with the physical and mental scars of conflict, something that only surfaces when there's time to dwell or they leave the service. It takes years to come to terms with the things they have seen.

Please guys, even if you don't support the war, next time you see a help the heroes tin on a shop counter or at the checkout, give a little thought to all the boys n girls working, training and fighting hard for the ultimate goal, the big picture, our freedom and others around the world suffering under tirany and suppression. Drop in a penny, a quid or more if you can and help support a great cause that we should all be proud of.

I think most combat or combat ready soldiers have some form of PTSD - it just didn't have a label until recently. If its not combat, it's the people behind clearing it up - medical staff etc. for every story I hear, there's another ten waiting to be told. We've been at war technically for over ten years, and before that there were plenty of deployments from 1990 onwards. It's got to be taking its toll by now. Personally, it's not the combat theatre that's terrifying, but the thought of a tour starting. I know I did 2 in NI, one in Bosnia, one in Kosovo, plus desert storm and operation enduring freedom. Desert storm was a blast - tons of training and over in days, but I saw so much carnage going into Kuwait that I often wonder now whether I dreamt it up. Those tomahawks, jets and gunships just blew the hell out of everything near an Iraqi soldier. I actually feel sorry for those troops of that particular conflict.
