You mean starting a war between NATO and Russia? I don't see how that could go wrong ...

I don't think freezing assets and bank acounts would need to tumble into war.

I hate bullies, infact in My school I had to show a couple of them the error
of their ways , when they decided to make life hard for a few people. As I
pointed out, you can help or stand back.

I doubt boycots would work. China wouldn't join in and the EU relies on Russian gas and Russia isn't really dependant on the EU. It's not the 1990's anymore.

Putin should put down his military machine and show how much he himself is prepared to fight, without the "tricks" of the KGB. Save countless pointless deaths.

Yup, few rounds with Klitschko should be enough to decide the future of Ukraine/Crimea.

Come on, Putin, have a go if you think you're hard enough.
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,334MI6 Agent
While I strongly oppose Putin's brinkmanship and military agression we need to keep some questions in mind:

    - How strong is the right wing (fascist?) influence on the Ukranian side?

    - Has there been any harassment of the Russian-speaking population?

    - Crimea was Russian until 1954, when Nikita Khrushchev gave the province to Ukraine on a whim.

    - It was downright funny when minister of State Kerry said: "One can't attack another country based on false accusations to further your own interests!" Many in Russia feels the US has done so in places like Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, and they are not completely wrong.

    - When Russia claims western powers are behind the popular rising in Kiev, they may very well be on to something. We know US government-backed NGO's partly financed and trained the oposition in Ukraine during the Orange revolution as well as in several countries in the Middle East before the Arab Spring.

-We must also remember that Russian political thinking has been Area of Influence and still is. Russia/The Soviet Union suffered horrendous losses during WWII. US and especially Norwegian losses were peanuts in comparison, and most of them was on their territory. Much of the cold war and certainly this conflict must be understood with this in mind. Russia is very scared of getting attacked again, and having friendly "buffer states" around them is enormously important to them.

I think it's very important to see the other side's perspective in a conflict. Keep in mind that even if we live in democracies our media might under-report certain aspects of a conflict and see the problem from only one side.

Ok here's my rant of the moment.

I went to buy a stamp yesterday at my local Post Office.

Me: A first class stamp please.
PO: When does it need to arrive?
Me: ummm as soon as possible please.
PO: Well first class can take 1-3 days. But we can get it there for you tomorrow recorded delivery, for only £6.22.
    Me: £6.22! Umm no thanks.
    PO: What's in it?
    Me: Come again?
PO: is there anything valuable, vouchers, cheques, anything like that?
Me: I'm not sure, my wife asked me to post it...
PO: Well we can insure it for you for only....
Me: No! no thanks. just the stamp please?
PO: Ok. Hey! When's your car insurance due for renewal? Would you like a credit card? Would you..... Where are you going, sir? Sir?

Now I'm not against upselling, but is it just me who thinks Post Offices ain't what they used to be? 8-)

Oh thank you, C&D, I am so glad that I am not the only person who finds this unacceptable. It happens in banks, too.
I sometimes try to sell them my stuff, if I happen to have the right gear with me. It usually confuses them no end! If they get annoyed, I just say "Well, you started it..." :)

Not that I'm aware of, but if they are true to form their solution would be to impeach Obama. That's pretty much the solution for everything for that bunch of........well, I'll just leave it at that.

Apparently they either don't know or they don't care, because they just keep going on and on despite the fact that they are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

went to bank this morning, and have come to conclusion, that there should be 3 types of window, pay money in , withdraw money
and morons, why is it I always get stuck behind the North Korean sheep farmer, " oh I need to draw out some money, but I have left my card at my aunties neighbours house, and she has gone away for 2 weeks ,and I cant get in cos my keys are in my car wich is in the garage being serviced, and blah blah blah" oi you hurry up and go away and die X-(
