    All spambots should be exterminated!

    Don't hesitate to use the Report post option and someone will get to it ... looks like someone already has?

    Speaking of these SPAM bots? Do we have to report each one, or will the Mods find all posts by that "bot" and get rid of them? I ask because I've noticed some of the 'bots' will post three threads in the same sub-forum. I report each one, but wondering if I have to? Kind of irritated I have to wait 60 seconds between each report to.

    No, you don't have to report all of them...reporting one will alert us to the spammer and then it can be dealt with... -{

    Spammers seem to post the same sh*t it annoys me, I have fun reporting them though.

    I just think it'd be more constructive to implement a simple question or something similar to deter or prevent these spammers joining up in the first place.

    It's clear that I'm not alone in being annoyed by the constant 3 post wonders who join, spam and either leave or get banned.

    Anyone suggested a more involving registering process to Si at all?

    Much depends on the code that Si has put in behind the scenes. We've gone through 3 or 4 different systems over the years, but spammers always find a way. TBH I don't know the ins and outs, but my guess is the more involved security processes has a cost (time/money/awkwardness) - I'm not sure.

    For the relatively small amount of hassle currently, I don't think we need to do too much, but if we are suddenly swamped (I've seen some forums ruined by huge amounts of spam) we will certainly hope to do something more.

    Keep em peeled people!

    These posts are from spambots...and not from actual people as such...so banning them changes nothing at all...as they wouldn't return anyway....the system you suggest would keep them away - for awhile at least...but that needs Si to return...

    Today we're being targeted by the cheap kitchen brigade. I've dealt with 3 already and no doubt there will be more.
    Thanks to the regular reporters, much appreciated!

    I see we've been hit by those pesky bots quite a bit recently.

    Will gladly keep on reporting them when I see the posts, but in the meantime is there anything that we can be do about them without the input of Si, or is it a question of grinning & bearing them for now?
  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 27,749Chief of Staff
    Alas, its grin and bear it time....Si was looking at this but he's got something he needs to deal with first....hopefully he will be back and get this sorted....thanks to all that report them -{

    Is it possible to change the registration procedure? New members in BAB have to wait for their account to be activated by an admin. Just putting it out there

    Yes I'm looking in to this, it's all easier said than done at the moment. Firstly I don't want to scare off genuine new members so I don't want anything too complicated. Unfortunately the system at the moment I believe is catching far too many new members and not enough spammers! - This needs addressing more than the spammers themselves!

    Secondly spammers find a way to get around everything! At the moment the site uses a third party forum system which has ground to a halt development wise. I am trying to use plugins that have been developed for the software to fix the issue, the problem is each of these needs testing as I have no proof they haven't been written by spammers in the first place! (quite unlikely but I don't trust code that's not my own!).

    I will get it fixed (for 5 mins before someone else comes along and breaks it), so if you can just bear with us for the moment.

    I've just done some research and the site is already running a captcha for registration and there is a system that checks registrations against a database of known spammers and denies them access.

    Obviously the captcha doesn't seem to be doing much! I have, as of today, enabled the captcha on login, please let me know if this makes any difference (to spammers, or to yourselves logging in).

    I have another method to test so give this a few days and let me know how it does then I will swap the system.

    Up till the last week or so, the spammers generally posted their rubbish three times; it seems to be only twice now. Don't know if that's significant.
  • Ens007Ens007 EnglandPosts: 863MI6 Agent
    Hopefully it's a sign that even they're getting bored of it now!! :))

    Perhaps we could set up a league table for members who report the spambots. And the
    Highest score gets to be made a double 0, :)) obviously it would take more than two kills. :))

    Most of the spammers used the email @guerillamail or a shortened version of that...but now they are (pretty much) all @yahoo.in with a few being @yopmail...maybe we could block those email addys ?

    I like that idea but I think we should aim to get rid of them first!

    That's a good idea I will look into it's feasibility.
