What is Canada for Americans?

Just curious, trying to understand what Americans (or others in the world) think or know about Canada..

I am Canadian but you won't offend me, don't worry.

Probably most of us think of Canada as a lot like us. . .except the people are more polite and say "oot" instead of "out."

Lol beedy eyes and flappy heads? (joke)

In seriousness, I've always known canadians to be a nice bunch, live in a cold place with bears and they love maple syrup. Oh and they have some sense too as they adopted our way of gun control, found it didn't work so went back to their original system whereas our government can't ever be seen to be wrong so we just stick with it.

Oh n my Bren gun is Canadian too (deact of course)

You lot are a bit slow sometimes. No offence, but I've talked to Canadians and physically want to shake them to speed up! Try telling a Canadian a joke, and you watch their eyes, whole face going through the entire thought process, like... Tick...tick....tick...tick... " Boom! "That's funny, eh..." Just laugh! I'm sure I'm being generalistic, but I always feel I need to wind Canadians up with a handle to work them faster...
That said, they're not as brash, materialistic nor interfer in world affairs as much as many of their, ahem, neighbours. I like that. I think Canada is a nice place, in the same way many of Europes Scandinavian countries are nice. Clean, well ordered, beautiful scenery, not the first to shout, scream and get involved, but will step up, however. Sure, they're all doing meaningful and brave things in Afghanistan, or were in Iraq as well, but do Al Qada know that? Probably not.
And maple syrup is weird. Strangly nice, but weird nonetheless.
And Canadians need to forget America and be more secure. I've known many Canadians ask what people think of them, I find that strange also, in fact, nobody from any other nation has ever asked me the same question.

Canada seems like a strange mixture of the US and Scandinavia.

To elabrorate: Perhaps a strange mixture of Norway and the US? The love of the outdoors, hiking and the welfare state reminds me of Norway. But on the other hand Canada often seem the US with fewer people and more nature, so there must be a lot more than the continent shared with the US.

More taxes than the US for sure. In Quebec you can expect to pay more than 50% if you make more than 100 000$. But free health care for all, and world class universities for about 4000$ a year (McGill).

I've only been to Banff, and that was almost 40 years ago, but the people were friendly and helpful. I had a great time. I was also stationed with two Canadians who joined the American military to fight the Communists in Vietnam...I understand that a large number of Canadians fought for us..that's a story that needs telling..

We have some black squirrels here in the U.S. Perhaps they're immigrant squirrels from Canada?

You never hear of Australia's involvement either. I was once chatting to an Aussie survival instructor who was there. He told me a few tales, but I checked them out and they were heavily involved in fighting for a while.

Ahh Canada, makes me think of only one song......

    I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay
I sleep all night and I work all day

    He's a lumberjack and he's okay
He sleeps all night and he works all day

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch

    I go to the lavatory

    On Wednesdays I go shopping

And have buttered scones for tea

    I like to press wildflowers

    I put on women's clothing

    And hang around in bars

Canada is our get away holiday spot. We go to Whistler once a year and Victoria several times.
I also go to the North Island (northern Vancouver Island) salmon and halibut fishing every
Summer. It's usually quiet and I find the folks quite nice. After we're fully retired we're going
to take the train from Vancouver to the East coast, then do the Maritimes.

Well I emigrated to Canada when I was 18 - and lived there for 10 years (now back in the UK)

I worked in Victoria, BC - and it's a favourite tourist spot for American's, so I got to see exactly how they see Canada.

Basically, a long lost distant cousin.....who they are not quite sure of the parentage.

It was assumed that US$ were accepted - BUT complete shock when given Canadain $ change. It was like I was giving them Disney World money (Victoria is on Vancouver Isalnd).... I was even asked if these forighn looking $'s were accepted on the mainland :)) :))

I was also asked if the Canadian Flag came in any different colours.... :o

(In fact, I think it was a surprise that we all spoke English and not French!)
I'm not sure what they teach American's about Canada in schools, but I can certainly say it's not much.... if anything at all :#
