  I'm a big fan of the Aubrey-Maturin books. Patrick O'Brian was a brilliant writer who immerses his readers into that world. Fantastic stuff. I've only read a few of them, as I'm very busy, but I always look forward to the chance to sail with Lucky Jack B-)

  Is it like the Sharpe novels? Do you have to read them in chronological order?
  
  I have got waylaid with both Sharpe and Flashman, because the authors don't write them chronologically, so I'm always thinking, well, should I read them in the order they come out, or the date order?

  I do believe they must be read in order, or at least they are meant to be read that way. I'm about halfway through the first one and its been a rollicking time, O'Brian REALLY knows how to immerse you into this fantastic world.
  
  Zig Zag, you've got 10 of them but are yet to read them??
  
  No doubt the beginning of Master and Commander left a big blue 'bruise' on my brain but once i got past it its been one of the most fascinating stories. I read somewhere that these stories were character driven, not so much story driven and this adds to the joy of reading it since you are not in any hurry to finish the book, you can take your time with it.
  
  Lucky Jack sure would be a heck of a captain in real life.

  Best to read them in order, I think, because it's the chronological story of their lives, really. That said, they're perfectly self-contained adventures, with references to past ones. Cracking good reads regardless!
