Was Bond supposed to have a scar?

I found this sketch on the internet and i admit the scar suits Bond, kinda made me wonder if he was meant to have that in the films.

In the Novels he has a scar on his cheek, so not quite as dramatic as the one in the sketch. I like the sketch BTW it has the right balance of classically handsome but tough and cruel looking. Not someone you would want to mess with, but handsome nonetheless. I think that in the sketch he looks something like a Dalton-Connery hybrid, which for me is about right.

I've often wondered if the cinematic Bond should have a scar. It certainly is referenced very often in the novels, so it is one of the literary characters most prominent facial features. I find it hard to imagine any of the Bond actors looking good with a scar though. Maybe they just leave it out to save the make-up artists and actors lots of time!
