Warner Archive Region 1 DVDs

A question perhaps more for my UK-based colleagues, though maybe those in the US are able to provide a few pointers.

I've been purchasing Region 1 Warner Archive DVDs through Amazon UK for a while now. They have a good range of titles, many catering for people like myself with eclectic tastes. I've noticed lately however they appear to have stopped selling them through the Amazon Marketplace which is an irritation.

At a casual glance it seems Ebay and/or Amazon US are the only way to go, but these don't offer customs-friendly prices.

Does any member know if such titles can be purchased without being hammered by extortionate handling/shipping fees resulting in ridiculous import fees at the British end? I can't make much sense from my online searching.

Or am I basically stuffed?

What's the problem with ebay.co.uk? No custom fees there, surely?

I looked on the HMRC website & there's a customs limit of £15.00 for goods coming into the UK. Anything above that is liable to import fees. The problem appears to be even on Ebay UK you get hammered with large handling/shipping fees at the US end which takes the total value over the limit. Amazon UK's pricing used to avoid this. I just wondered if there was another online shopping outlet that sold these things cheaply, thus avoiding the extra payments. I couldn't find anything so it was just a wild stab in the dark really.

Thanks for your input all the same.

Are you trying to get US DVDs then to play on a US player? Is that it, so unlikely to find them on ebay.co.uk? Apols for thickness on my part.

Could you arrange it personally with the seller, or is that risky or illegal?

Yes, I'm after Region 1 US DVDs to play on a multi-region player. I've found over the years that we are continually stuffed by film companies in the UK. A lot of great titles are unavailable here & those that are usually get a substandard release, be it a cut version or lacking in the extras available Stateside.

I've not thought of going direct to the sellers. It's not illegal to import as long as for personal use so I may delve deeper in this area. Or I may just have to accept being penalised financially for a much better product.

I used to import Region 1 DVD's from Play.com - but that was many, many years ago...it used to be very easy, then they changed part of the company to PlayUSA.com....and it wasn't as good...I don't bother to import US DVD's anymore as the UK DVD's are a lot better now, and in lots of instances are better than the US DVD...
