In many encyclopedia, you find names (sometimes very hard to believe names) that have been contacted to play one day James Bond.
For instance, Jeremy Brett, contacted to be Bond for OHMSS.
Paul Newman and Robert Redford for live and let die
Adam West for OHMSS
Larry Hagman and Christopher Reeve for the living daylights
Liam Neeson for Goldeneye
Ian Ogilvy for OHMSS then For your eyes only
French actor Lambert Wilson for the living daylights
Julian Mc Mahon for Casino Royale

If we can the see on the dvd bonus screen tests about actors like James Brolin in Octopussy and Sam Neil for the living daylights, many other names are just fantasy.
What are the serious names ever considered to feature James Bond ?
To this moment, and the moment yet to come (The man with the golden gun)

i laugh everytime, i hear about Liam Neeson and Goldeneye, apparantly he turned it down because he was not interested in action films and look at him now with one of the most profitable action franchises with Taken!!! haha

As always when a new Bond is being cast a lot of names are being thrown around and of course the producers invite some actors for screen tests. However, to my knowledge, only James Brolin (DAF) and Pierce Brosnan (TLD) were actually contracted to play Bond. Brolin was replaced by Connery, but had his contract paid in full. And Brosnan was replaced by Dalton when CGS picked up the option on Remington Steel.

Quick correction: John Gavin was contracted for DAF, not James Brolin.

Brolin did screentest for Octopussy. The other screentest I have seen was Sam Neill for TLD and I think he would have done a great job.

I read an interview where Lewis Collins who said he had an interview with Cubby Broccoli but blew it so never made it to a screentest.

IMO there is always the one they already have in mind and who eventually gets the job (you know their names), a group of lesser known ones who they also test to see if something comes up (James brolin, Sam Neill,John Richardson,...), and then there´s a bunch of rumours that they probably start themselves of well known names who will never ever be James Bond and they know it (Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson).

Oops, you are correct of course, had the right person in mind, just the wrong name.
