"Original Song" was expected, but "Original Score" is a pleasant surprise! I really hope Roger Deakins can receive his first win for "Cinematography." Skyfall really was a beautiful film. (IMO, he should win for the silouette fight scene alone.) Sound Mixing and Sound Editing are always tough to predict because you never know what the voters are really paying attention to. All in all, it's good to see 5 nominations! Plus, the whole world will be focused on Bond for the special tribute. A good time to be a Bond fan! :007)
Five nominations is impressive. Perhaps no surprise that Skyfall was not nominated for Best Picture. No nod for Javier Bardem either, I thought he had a decent chance. Having seen how the Academy members usually pick the winners every year, I would be stunned if Skyfall won in ANY category considering it's competitors.
the bastards owe a win for Deakins, he has been shunned too many times for really great looking pics. The only contender I see other than him is Kaminsky, a perennial favorite.

I'm not surprised by the film not being nominated in the major categories: in the last few years, the Academy gave awards to Return of the King and to Heath Ledger's Joker (and--let's be honest--would he have even been nominated if he wasn't dead?); so they probably feel that should cover the Fantasy/Adventure genre for the next fifty years or so. Cinematography and score are the only surprises for me. And before anyone talks about Skyfall being snubbed, have a look at Dark Knight Rises. . .

Skyfall (Stuart Baird) has been nominated for an award by the American Cinema Editors guild in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category. The awards recognize outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries. The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the International Ballroom of the Beverley Hilton Hotel on Saturday, February 16th.

I think the Academy has never really had as much credibility as people seem to give them. 2 minor awards for Bond in 50 years has made that fairly clear. It seems to be run by film snobs with pure disdain for action and adventure.

And yet . . . a movie like "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" managed to win Best Picture nine years ago. Even "Star Wars" was nominated back in 1978.
Like you, I don't have much faith in the Oscars. I think it's nothing more than a popularity contest for film snobs. But not even I would have nominated "Skyfall" for Best Picture.

I am glad to hear that Skyfall has some Oscar nominations. I have always felt it was a shame that since 1982 no James Bond movie even got a nomination in the technical catagories like sound,cinematography or visual effects. I do hope that the film wins at least win or awards that is nominated for. Last years Oscar were diapointing to me since it seemed like all of the technical awards(which is what I watch the show for anyways) were resevered for the same movies up for best picture.
I've heard a lot of politically-active Academy members recently say they won't vote for Zero-Dark-Thirty in any category because it condones torture. Wonder if these same delightful sorts - who seem incapable of separating movies from real life (unless it's a film like 'Che' or something akin to their own political views) - are the ones who have prevented any James Bond film from winning any Oscars in decades because the films condone sexism, violence etc etc etc.
I think theres more to it. Hollywood, being a bunch of hippie californians, are left wing. The whole fiasco with "war on terror" during the bush administration had to deal with the terror memos and all the crap he authorized with torture ("enhanced interrogation") So naturally, all the hippies being anti-government hate what happened, which, while illegal, still happened and was authorized by bush and his cronies. There is still a lot of hate and resentment for those eight years of hell, so having someone put it on film is in itself torture.
The London Evening Standard has revealed its shortlist (nominations) for their British Film Awards for 2012. The awards are dedicated to championing British movie-making talent. Skyfall has been nominated for Film of the Year. The ceremony takes place at the London Film Museum in County Hall on the 4th February.

Skyfall/Jany Temime is one of five nominees for Excellence in Contemporary Film.
