Was anyone bothered by... spoiler

...the fact that moneypenny is a black girl? I'm no racsist (otherwise i would be living in the wrong part of town :)) ) but i think it's just incorrect. I had the same with felix leiter a few years ago, but now again... is this positive discrimination? Does anyone know why they chose her (probably because they thought she was a good actress, but does anyone have any good information to share)?

Not bothered at all. Harris and Craig have an awesome on screen chemistry. If she stays in the role past Craigs tenure, I'm sure she'll have the same chemistry. I hope Harris stays around for a while.

Can't say I'd given it any thought on that level...Miss Harris seems a more than capable actress...and very easy on the eye too ;%

    Nope.

Why should it matter? Skin colour has nothing to do with ability... and your comments suggest they do on both levels.
    1. A balck girl can't work for M16
    2. A black girl shouldn't play Moneypenny... 8-)

I think given the Banter she and Bond had in Skyfall. Miss Harris is going to
    Be a Very,Very Good Miss Monepenny. -{
As for her being Black, So Fu*king What. As far as I can see she Ticks all the Boxes.
Hell she even shot Craig, that alone gets a Big thumbs up from Me. :))

You don't like black actors playing felix leiter or eve, but you don't say why....

Why not? It's his opinion. I don't like a black Felix or Moneypenny either.

    Not in the slightest.

And, IMHO, Jeffrey Wright is the definitive Felix Leiter - his ethnic origin is irrelevant.

I will be happy to answer your question.

Let me start by saying that I am in no way a racist. I love the James Bond novels Ian Fleming wrote. In the books Moneypenny, Felix, M and James Bond are all white people, M is also a male in the books. I think it's great that we have a male M back, and i'm not a male chauvinist.

Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond because he is the one that IMO comes closest to Ian Fleming's version. I just like to have it as original as possible, just like Ian Fleming wrote it. I hope this answers your question.

More concerned with how the two of them interact with each other. I think they nailed the relationship between Bond and Moneypenny bang on.

Like I said before, I'm all for people having an opinion, but what's important here is a reason why, otherwise IMO people can come across as very short sighted.

I don't like the idea of a black Bond, but that's because he's traditionally a white Englishman.

You could say the same of Moneypenny, Q, M etc but they're not the main character, which in my mind, makes all the difference.

Just to make it clear, I wasn't attempting to call you out (or imply you were) as a racist.

You've given a very well reasoned answer & good on you for backing up your opinion.

As another poster has just said, I look to see the interactions between the actors / characters and I think Craig has excelled in this regard with Wright previously, along with Harris presently.

I don't worry I know that, no hard feelings :).

I think Harris did a fine job as Moneypenny, her acting was great. But my dream actress for Moneypenny is Gemma Arterton. But it would be weird to bring her back from the dead.

No problem at all. In fact, I loved the creation of the back story between Bond and Moneypenny...and the scene in which Bond arrives in the office and you see the hat-stand and the padded door leading to M's office was a wonderful throw-back to the Connery/Maxwell days. I too think she'll be an awesome Moneypenny and I think she will help develop the more human side of Craig's Bond.

Any sentence that begins with, "I'm not racist, but..." always worries me. That being said, I think the people writing on this post have their hearts in the right place.

Absolute fidelity to Fleming would require that all the films take place in the 1950s. I think that having an all-white cast in the 21st century would be more conspicuous than not. I'm all for staying close to the characters of the books, but let's not take that to absurd, alienating lengths.
It's all right. It's quite all right, really. She's having a rest. We'll be going on soon. There's no hurry, you see. We have all the time in the world.

The only problem I have with it is that the very nature of the Bond/Moneypenny relationship, to date, has been that it never gets consummated. The idea of having them be interracial can be interpreted by some people as playing into the notion of keeping the races separate, something that quite a few people in society still believe.

Not the thing that worried me most about Skyfall, any more than that Bond doesn't even catch her surname at any point during their meetings. 8-)

Or the fact that no matter that Leiter is black, it's more that he has nothing to do with Fleming's character as depicted. Okay, nor did a lot of the white actors who played him. But you've got a fair case of double standards when so many fans nominate Rick van Nutter as the best Leiter because he's truest to the guy in the books, when we can't say a thing about the guy in Casino Royale and QoS - who is totally unlike the happy, almost zany chum of the books. I could go with a black Leiter who is very much like the character, I don't know, sort of Arsenio Hall back in the day, a lighthearted guy. Without that in common, well, yeah it does begin to look like having the token black guy.

It sticks less with Moneypenny cos she wasn't drawn so fully in the books, but yeah Naomi Harris isn't much like her even so. I would prefer a less street MP, I mean some black girls do posh or rather well spoken, I would be more okay with that.
