Will there be Bond movies after Craig's contract expires?

perdoggperdogg Posts: 432MI6 Agent
Does anyone believe the Bond Franchise will definitely be around after Craig? Not to say that Craig is my choice per se to be Bond, or the best, I just do not believe that the series will have any real relevance in the few years and here are my reasons:

1. Creativity - I do not think that there is going to be any new break throughs in the suri generous Bond storyline. I guess they could remake the earlier films or "go back in time". I not sure the audience will approve of that. The producers will take a big risk like they took in Quantum if they go full realpolitik. Just about everything has been done...

2. Cost - ...and for a lot less. The present day economic realities and future recessions will put a cap on how much money that can be spent on all movies not just action movies. If there is nothing unique about Bond, then why make a Bond movie.

3. Demographic - Changing demographics of the film audience and political correction will put pressure on the producers to alter the traditions of the Bond films, as we have seen in the Craig-Bond trilogy. Is Bond always going to white in a country that is becoming Southwest Asian as in Britain or Hispanic in the US? Will Bond eventually become a woman? Laugh now about it, ask Dr Who fans about that one. Mike and Babs need to make money. Many fans will not see a Bond movie if Bond is not a white male.

Yes Bond will return after DC has exited.
    1. Their will always be creative people with a story to tell. Bond is flexible as seen in the change from SC to RM.
    2. Over the last 50 years the economy has gone through ups and downs but films have survived. Actually as recessions hit usually movies draw more due to people wanting a little escape from the real world.
    3. Why is the fact that Bond is a white male a problem? I wouldn't want to watch a remake of Shaft as a white person. Some characters are iconic and have certain identifying traits. As for Doctor Who he is currently portrayed by Matt Smith who is a white male, as all of his previous incarnations, so I don't understand your point.

The Bond franchise has been running for 50 years now - much of which it owes to large audience attendances. I'm quite sure a lot of people had said it wouldn't survive Connery's departure (I wasn't born yet, but I'm willing to bet on it ;) ), but, lo and behold, its now been through SIX lead actors, and people are still flocking to the films.

The long and the short of it: the franchise has outlived its literary creator, and its two original producers. It's been going on long before Craig was signed up; it will still be running when he leaves.

In my view creativity is the key ingredient, and I agree with Agent007jamest that there will always be creative people with a story to tell. The producers have done a great job putting together the right creative team for the films so I think they will continue. As far as cost and demographics go, as long as the films keep bringing in the money they will still be made. The fact that Skyfall has done so well at the box office ensures there will be another Bond movie. :D

I think there is at least 15 books that haven't been turned into films yet right? Not from the Fleming books but the other authors a lot haven't been done. Daniel Craig has 2 more on his contract and afterwards it's rumored he wants to be done with the series.

With the 15 books you would assume at a bare minimum another 3 actors will come through the ranks and with books still being written I wouldn't be surprised if in 50 years we were having a 100 years of Bond celebration.

Not to mention the "Young Bond" books as well which could lead a young actor in his early 20's to stardom.

Long story short I think it's going to be one of those things that is around forever.

Is this a rhetorical question? Given the long history of Bond movies despite changing demographics, economic conditions, political trends, etc., what evidence is there to suggest that Bond films would go away after Craig relinquishes the role?

There is NO evidence to suggest this at all. Look at the pedigree...

    1. Popular opinion said that Bond would be finished after Connery retired.
    2. Even Lazenby thought OHMSS was going to be the last film.
    3. People said that there had been too long a gap after LTK and that GE would flop.
    4. There was that huge rant when DC was chosen.

There will be more Bond after DC, some young pup will come into the role in 5-10 years time. It will still be a huge success. I have every confidence in that!

PS - I am thinking that the NEXT actor to play 007 will be younger than me....that will be the only upsetting thing about a new appointment!

Everyone else has pretty much said it. The Bond series has survived all sorts of problems, be it due to internal or external forces & still finds an audience. The bottom line is people seem to like watching a bloke beat insurmountable odds to win the day. And Bond fills that niche nicely.

    It's a cash cow.
Cubby and Harry always said Bond was bigger than
any of the actors that have played the character.

The series is in very good health at the moment. As long as the franchise continues to be run the way it has been, and as long as the films remain as relevant and popular then there is every reason to suggest the series will continue for the foreseeable future.

Bond will definitely continue. This is a 50 year old franchise on its 6th leading actor where the latest movie has taken just under $900 million at the box office.

In 50 years time they will be celebrating the 100th anniverary of Bond which will really piss me off because I will be dead and have missed some.

I won't be! (hopefully) which is something that I'm quite excited about :))

And I'm sure heaven has movie theatres ;)

I don't mean to sound like an enemy agent of Spectre, Perdogg, but this type of question on whether Bond will survive is IMO the single most boring question in Bond fandom.

Once again I will offer Cubby' response when asked how long Bond will last: "Until doomsday."

As long as humanity exists there will be Bond movies.

What is it going to take for honest Bond fans like yourself to realize that Bond is not a temporary phenomemon?

We are talking about a character that has reached the level of legend, folks. And legends never die.

As good ol' Rog recently said, Craig has guaranteed another 50 years of 007.

You will be taking your grandkids to Bond #46 and scoffing about the time you questioned Bond' longevity in 2012.

I keep thinking that we have reached the point where the question should be relegated to the trash heap but once again I am talking to Bond fans who attempt to rationalize the phenomenon as if it is like another series.

There has NEVER been anything in film history like Bond.

As such, we are in uncharted territory.

Bond fans need never worry about Bond' s future because there will ALWAYS be a future.

Even the questioning of this certainty is "Shocking. Positively shocking."

"You're mad. Do you know that?"
    "Yes. Isn't everyone?"

Hell, I'm taking my grandkids NOW! (I'm 54; been a fan since the 60s)

Totally agree with everything you say, bigzilcho. There has NEVER been anything in film history like Bond. The closest parallel I can think of isn't Batman but Sherlock Holmes who is arguably as popular now (the 3rd Downey/Law movie is in preparation; the 3rd BBC "Sherlock" will be filmed soon) as ever- and since he's out of copyright, it's not a direct comparison.

Considering how well SkyFall has done critically and commercially, I can't imagine why they wouldn't give it a shot with another actor when Craig is done.

    Skyfall just eclipsed Avatar as the biggest film in UK history. I would venture to say that even if global popularity did wane, Bond would live on in England in the same way that oh say, Macbeth and Othello live on for several centuries after they were created. Bond is part of UK culture, as far as I (an American) can tell. And good on them for it. -{

    Yup, I agree

And it did it without the huge amount of more expensive 3D tickets that Avatar was marketed with.

I would be stunned if they stopped making Bond films after Daniel Craig has left the role. If it can survive Connery leaving the role and a six year hiatus, then the Bond franchise is going to keep on ticking.

How will it adapt to historical events and the geopolitical terrain in two to five decades time? Maybe we'd have Americans standing in for generic political bad guys. :v

If the Bond franchise could cope with the sudden and relatively unexpected end of the Soviet Union pretty well with GoldenEye, then Bond could cope with a lot of other shifts in the geopolitical landscape and future trends.

Of course there will. They may not be any good, but there will be. I just hope they don't put Craig in another YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE or MOONRAKER. :))
