Daniel Craig may have managed to wangle a pay deal that will make him the envy of his predecessors as James Bond – a cool £31million for the next two instalments in the series – but it will still probably not to confer much gravitas upon him for some within his profession.

Toby Stephens, the distinguished stage actor, who appeared as a baddie in Die Another Day and has been touted as a successor to Craig, says he can’t face appearing in another Bond film.

“After [Die Another Day], I felt, 'I don’t want to do this any more because it uses about that much of my band-width,” Stephens says, holding up a finger and thumb just slightly apart.

The affable 43-year-old son of the late Sir Robert Stephens and Dame Maggie Smith says he is concerned, too, about the typecasting that comes with Bond films.

“Film and TV people go, 'You do that kind of thing,’ and that’s where they want to keep you.’” Happily, after Die Another Day, Stephens was able to re-establish his credentials as a proper actor with stage roles in Hamlet, A Doll’s House and Danton’s Death.

Sounds a bit of a rant from behind his Handbag. :))

    How the hell has he been touted as a sucessor? No offense to him, but IMO there is nothing bond about him. And this may sound harsh, but he doesn't strike me as even nearly good looking enough for the part...

    I like Toby Stephens a lot. I think he's a great actor and he's had some great roles, but this is the first I have ever heard linking him with the role of Bond and I don't really see him in that role...as apparently he doesn't either!

    He irritated me big time with his smugness in DAD hence I give him his dues as an actor as I guess that was what his role and acting required!

    Now there's a guy who will never have to worry about being typecast as Bond!

    There is no way he will ever play Bond, too much on the 'Posh' side to be honest.

    He sounds just fine as Bond on the radio (though he can't pull off Philip Marlowe at all).

    That movie was so bad that Rosmunda Pike wanted no more of the James Bond series either, in fact, she blamed it on her faultering career a few years ago, albeit a bit recovered now.

    Toby Stephens was in the running? Never really considered him seeing as he already played the main villain in one film, not to mention he's 43 years old and so he's a bit old to start playing Bond for a certain period of time.

    I don't think that he's got anything to worry about re being cast as James Bond, really. Though he is Radio Bond at the very least. -{

    The article seems like a response to an imaginary discussion. He has more chance of creating time travel than succeeding DC.

    He is only 1 year younger than DC. So that rules out his being a sucessor, before we even get into the other issues.

    He happens to be a villan in arguably one of the worst bond films. I'm hardly surprised that DAD didn't push his acting ability. Madonna "acted" in it, for goodness sake!

    Hey his character died in DAD and though he's played Bond in audio productions he has never been a serious contender for the film role.

    Now I don't want to appear cynical or anything but....could this just be a little self promotion using the Bond connection as a trigger?....like all those actresses who say in press releases that they "deny they are the next Bond Girl"?...could it? ..........!
