Indiana Jones-Esque Movies?

JarvioJarvio EnglandPosts: 4,241MI6 Agent
I love the Indiana Jones movies, but dammit there's not enough of them.
Does anyone know of any similar films I could check out? Adventures, temples, artifacts, etc?

The Mummy films with Brendan Fraser, National Treasure films with Nicholas Cage, and Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie come to mind, but I wouldn't particularly recommend any of them.

I have mixed feelings regarding the Indiana Jones films. I rate Raiders of the Lost Ark very highly, The Last Crusade not far behind. Not a fan of Temple of Doom, weak story and two annoying characters, Willie Scott and Short Round. Have only seen a couple of clips of Crystal Skull, never inspired me to watch the whole film.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll look into them.

Regarding the Indiana Jones films, I love all 4 of them. Temple of doom I really love actually, but as you say, Willie Scott and Short Round are very annoying - and because of them, TOD ranks second for me rather than first - making Last Crusade my favourite. I think Raiders is overrated, but still love it nonetheless, and rank that 3rd. Crystal Skull is definitely the worst - but having said that, it's still a decent enough film in it's own right.

Big Trouble in Little China came out around then and has a John Barry score. Never seen it.

Like Star Wars, I think the Lucas touch was so strong that it didn't generate many imitators, unlike the Bond series.

What about those 1940s films it was modelled on, like The Maltese Falcon? Or Casbah?

No, it has a John Carpenter score, and it's a MUST-SEE!!!!

The Mummy Returns is the best of the Indy wannabes IMO. Tomb Raider 2 isn't too bad...

    Really? My bad.

Barry should have done films like that though, they would have suited him.

The Rocketeer is a hidden gem, Serenity too.
I actually liked John Carter, a lot better than the recent Star Wars movies.

Yeah, those three are really great (I own them all), but the term 'Indiana Jones-esque' is being applied rather loosely now... :))

You have off the top of my head....

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns - Both are good, I like the Mummy better then Mummy returns, but its a good "adventure" movie. And newer then the other ones. I still laugh at the bookcase bit in "The Mummy"

King Soloman Mines - I never liked this, still fun to see a very young Sharon Stone. It feels like a "Rip off" of Indiana Jones.

Romancing the Stone - It thought of as one of the best movies of 1984. With Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito with the same director as "Back to the Future". Also it has one bit (the famous mudslide) that has a funny sexual innuendo that would make bond proud.

I agree. I mentioned Serenity and John Carter in terms of the playfull and adventerous feel of the movies. I'd say Rocketeer is definately Indiana Jones-esque.

I ordered the box set of all 3, so yes. Not much money tbh, so all is good. Yes I noticed that one had quite a poor score on IMDB (5.2 I think)

Just my two cents, The third of the Mummy films is the weakest.
But it does have some great action scenes. Sadly Maria Bello is
    No Rachel Weisz. :#

Well I watched The Mummy today. I'd seen it before, but that was years ago and I couldn't remember much about it. Anyway, I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed it. There were some brilliant visuals/effects in the film too.
