  I just never understood the whole bullet eating away his senses thing. "He'll keep getting stronger until the day he dies" they said - but if it was eating off his senses surely he'd end up just being a Blind, deaf man who couldn't taste, smell or touch. I think they probably just meant that in terms of him feeling pain though. Other than that he was a great villain! Portrayed very well by Carlyle.

  Now, they only eat rat.

  I think you make an excellent point about one of the primary shortcomings of Brosnan's Bond films. The lack of development of the Renard character is a prime example.

  In the movie, I thought Renard was somewhat minimalized as the villain, and his character wasn't developed very well. We know he feels no pain, but aside from the hot rock, we really get no indication or development of that. The novelization does a better job of making Renard a more serious threat and menacing villain.

  He was a counterfeint, Elektra was the real villain. I felt that Caryle was in retrospect another TV star like most of the others in that film. At the time it was seen as quality casting, but I miss genuine foreign accents. He is a bit miscast, but you could argue the whole build up is a bit like that of Silva in SF - who turns out to be nothing much imo. Bond used to be a cipher for the villains, now the villains are a cypher for Bond.
