Regarding the death of M (Dench) after watching SF again ,i wish M ,would have got her
gong, and retired to the country and had a nice old age ,perhaps Bond could have visited her in the future
rather than dying ,perhaps im just an old sentimentalist comments please,
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

I, too, have a soft spot for M, and perhaps a gentle retirement would have been appropriate after all she has been through with Bond. But I think her death gave Skyfall a more memorable, emotional impact.

For me nothiing's bad with M,'s death. She was old, she have done, what she had to do and her time passed.
And I didn't like her, she left Bond for 14 months in Korea.

Btw. More about M. - http://kboo3.blogspot.com/2013/02/m-like-maroonedmisfortunemiserymissionm.html Please come and comment!

I guess this is the reason why skyfall is dropping in my rankings, as For some reason, I don't CARE for M.

I'm sure most people have seen the film, but shouldn't this be in both the Skyfall boards, and definitely have some sort of spoiler tag?

M's death had almost no effect on me. I think part of the problem for me was that she was portrayed as such an unsympathetic character for so much of the film: her complete lack of concern for Bronson, her poor judgment in ordering Eve to take the shot, her cold initial reception to Bond returning, her rationalization for giving up Silva and so on. I'm sure the filmmakers wrote her that way because someone in her position has to be stern and cold to deal with all the difficult decisions but this is a movie, not reality, and that kind of behavior only serves to distance the character form the audience. I also didn't care for the way Dench's role in the franchise grew from film to film or that fact that she basically functioned as a surrogate mother for much of her time with Craig. So for me, it was high time she was written out.

The one thing that I think a lot of people have overlooked about her death however is that it could allow you to make the argument that Silva succeeded in his scheme (taking revenge against M) while Bond failed at what he arguably wanted most out of the mission: to save her.

But that was the whole point of the film. It wasn't ye olde good versus evil, but a war of conscience and loyalty, betrayal and a deep look into what it takes to win the game of espionage chess. Sacrificing your pawn to win the king... the bigger picture. Silva wasn't bad, far from it - but a creation of M's through doing the job she had to do. In the end, what we have to think about is the individual vs the population, and the sacrifices those in M's position have to make to maintain our freedom and lifestyle as it is. It's not a job for a person with a normal conscience that we understand.

Exactly! And yet through it all there was a subtext of a deep bond (no pun intended) between M and Bond, and for that reason I was touched by M's death.

M's death did not have the emotional impact on me that perhaps it should have. First of all, I knew it was coming so I only have myself to blame there. But subsequent events to the death scene also took away some of its impact. Such as Kincade and the torch, DOH!
