I LOVED the Shanghai and Macau scenes....and the boat scene too....I thought they were very Bondian indeed...and they looked spectacular....
I don't often agree with Sir Miles ( as he's usually wrong ) But
I loved these scenes as well. -{
Crickey ! Makes me think twice about those scenes now )
You know I'm right really...soon I'll have you converted on QoS
+1 re those SF scenes, I really enjoyed them and thought them totally Bondian. Less so on the QoS angle, though I have to admit it's growing on me (minus the first half editing and the abomination that passed for a title song, of course).

Abomination.....?.....and you call yourself a music fan
Composed by David Arnold ("Surrender", which should have been the main title theme for TND (he did the score) rather than the end title theme; "The World Is Not Enough" theme & score; "Only Myself To Blame" (also from TWINE; heard instrumentally in the score); DAD score (don't blame him for the Madonna song); "You Know My Name" & CR score; QoS score)
Lyrics by Don Black (TB; DAF; TMWTGG; "Surrender"; "Only Myself To Blame")
Vocal by Dame Shirley Bassey (GF; MKBB; DAF; MR)
If those aren't Bond credentials I don't know what is!

That's ok...bland...but ok...but it doesn't 'fit' the film at all...QoS is a rampage of a film....tearing all away to get to the truth....not Bond in 'reflective' mode...

Stereotypical, I'll give you. Contrived, I'd accept. Old-fashioned, definitely. Bland, never!
And I'd say the lyrics do fit the film!

I didn't care for the Shanghai scenes though I liked what they were trying to do. Craig's Bond seemed like a tailor's dummy and I had this sneeking suspicion with Mendes that it's deliberate, and there's some subtext I can't see. The modern movies move fast so when they slow down they seem to come to a total halt. I liked the idea as in the look of the skyscraper assassination scene (not the morality of it, though), it was all neon and Pearl and Dean 1960s advertising. Personally I wasn't taken by the directing of it however.
If that song posted above is Bassey doing No Good about Goodbyes, I thought it was actually done after QoS! My God, that really should have been the finale, and just think of the publicity they'd have got, having Bassey. You can't buy that. Well, okay you can but it involves Heinken. If that's what they did, no wonder Arnold felt not so bad about being off Skyfall.

Doesn't look like Matthew Vaughn will have time for BOND 24. He's making Mark Millar's THE SECRET SERVICE. Sounds an intriguing premise - the world's greatest secret agent acts as mentor to his wayward nephew. Could be KICK-ASS meets 007. If slick (& successful) enough could give EON pause for thought. Yet another gear change in the continuing restyling of the Bond series? Good grief, how will fans cope??

Okay, I'm on board with 'abomination' for the song they did use now.

My point exactly.
No, song choice by record company politics. Someone decided that having the title song sung by a 70-year old wouldn't sell the film.
