I heard that quite a few were considered or screen tested including Gerard Butler, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Henry Cavill and others.

IMO Daniel Craig was the best choice of these. I've not come across Alexis Denisoff though.

Hugh Jackman was quoted recently saying that he turned down the role. At the time, he felt it was wrong, it would box him in too much limiting the range of offers/options open to him.

We have to distinguish between what was considered on the net and who was considered by the producers. I'm also careful when actors claim they turned down the role. Were they really offered the role or were they really just concidered? I remember many saying Dalton was offered the role in 68, but Dalton himself says there were just questions if he was interested etc. I suspect some actors claim they were offered the role when the producers just checked if they were interested, available and their thoughts about the part.

Having said that, we know Henry Cavill and Sam Worthington were among the last three along with Craig. Domenic West, Rupert Friend and Alex O'Laughlin were also among a large number of actors who were tested.

Jonny Lee Miller was also considered during this period, I believe he was even screen tested.

Really? I did not know that. He's terrific in Elementary as an alternative universe Holmes, but Bond surely not.

Interesting - did you know that Bernard Lee of M fame was his grandfather?

It appeared in the (now defunct) News of the World in August 2004 (have the cutting somewhere in the vaults).

According to Barbara Brocolli, they had decided on Craig pretty early on. But the studio "didn't want any stones unturned." So for the sake of making the studios happy, they casted some other actors. But Craig was their number one man from the start.

The first time that I saw Daniel Craig linked with the James Bond role was in early 2005 on the front page of the Belfast Telegraph. He was of course unveiled as the new James Bond on 14 October 2005 - my 21st Birthday, coincidentally. :)

I seem to recall Julian McMahon was a consideration before Daniel Craig was cast. I must admit, I'd have been intrigued to see his take, as his questionably moral-ed Christian Troy on "Nip/Tuck" has vague echos of the ruthless womanizing ways of James Bond. Plus, he's got a very good look for the role itself, tall, dark-hared, and blue eyed, and looked good in a suit or a tuxedo, and was almost always in an expensive, tailored suit on "Nip/Tuck".

I think this requires us to piece it together from fragments. I think it's true to say that Babs decided early on that Dan was the man. Both Wilson and Campbell needed convincing, as did the studio. So when Babs says there was only everyone man for the job she is being truthful from her perspective. She held out, and eventually won the day, but it wasn't a smooth passage.
