A little belatedly, but yesterday - 19th March - would have been Patrick McGoohan's 85th birthday.

An early choice to play Bond due to his popularity in tv's Danger Man, he cemented the role of the secret agent as an urbane adventurer playing MI9's John Drake.

Undoubtedly his crowning achievement though was as Number 6 - The Prisoner.

A truly unique and talented individual.

    I also think that he's the only actor to have appeared
    in every series of Columbo, (until his death obviously )
    even directed some episodes and writing one. A very
    talented actor. -{

    'Danger Man' is my favorite TV spy show, and I love the character of John Drake. The greatness of 'The Prisoner' goes without saying.

    The episodes of 'Columbo' featuring McGoohan were some of the best in the series. I once read an interview with Peter Falk in which he said how intimidating working with McGoohan could be. Not because he was a jerk or anything, but because he was just so talented.

    I should also add that he was very good as the prison warden (ironic casting, no?) in 'Escape from Alcatraz.' Well, really he was good in pretty much everything he did.

    I agree - a great actor. I'm writing a piece linking a The Prisoner episode to James Bond at the moment. :)

    He played the villain in four separate Columbo episodes - and directed some. Falk and McGooghn were great friends. It's a real shame that he died in January 2008, just shy of his 80th birthday. :#

    The thing that I could never understand about Mr McGooghan was that he turned down the role of James Bond as too violent/too much sex etc. but then went to star as a murderer in no less than four episodes of Columbo, the most of any guest star murderer in the show's history. I really can't get my head around that one at all. :s
