Yes it is, but I stick by my guns that I hate remakes in every shape and form. I believe that a film should never be remade. It's downright lazy and un-creative IMO. And to top that off, LALD is my favourite bond film.

Yes, but we're talking about a remake of the novel version, not the film version. There is a difference, as not a lot of the novel actually features in the film version as released - there's more of it in Licence to Kill, in fact. This is a very important distinction.

True, and yes I've heard lots about how many films take elements from different novels. In that case then I would be ok with it as long as they didn't call it LALD and didn't have the same character names in it (Kananga etc).
I have read LALD but that was years ago. I do remember it seeming to have a similar moment from the FYEO film concerning a boat, net, and sharks.
In my Opinion if they'd wanted to do a remake of LALD.

Yes, this is the type of thing I'd be thinking of. I think that if done right, under a new title, it could work as a new Bond film. There was no Dr Kananga in the original novel of course, his name coming from Ross Kananga, the owner of the crocodile farm seen in the film - he also did the famous jump over the crocodiles backs, of course.

Well realistically they could have done that with LALD. Call it something else, have a voodoo theme (like Angel Heart), carve up Felix and off you go. More of a nod to Live and Let Die really, but following the theme.
Agreed...and there's a fair amount of Fleming from the LALD novel that can be culled for a film set in NYC and the Caribbean. If ever a Bond could get a pinky finger broken, IMO it's Craigger :007) Get a good title, and roll with it.

They keep on prolonging Daniel Craig's term as James Bond. Now we may have to wait until 2015 or 2016 for the next movie and then 2019 for the movie after that. I don't want to wait until the year 2020 for there to be a new actor to play "James Bond". I'm getting older here. Please don't let Daniel Craig be the last James Bond I will ever see.
After seeing the preview of the new "The Saint" tv series, I am beginning to think history could repeat itself and Adam Rayner, the new "Simon Templar", could become the next 007th James Bond. He will be 36 this year.
There is virtually nothing left from the LALD novel that wasn't used in either the LALD film, FYEO or LTK. It would be crazy to try to do a remake/re-adaptation.
This is my view as well. Still, I've long thought that Fleming's Mr. Big could be properly used in a film; and I used to think Michael Clarke Duncan would be the perfect actor to play him. . .but it would take Baron Samedi performing his magic for that to happen now. . .

Maybe we should form some sort of suicide pact. You can throw me in a casket of snakes and I'll pop a shark pellet in your mouth )
Interesting suggestion on Adam Rayner there, that would be quite a turn up for the book having him follow Sir Roger Moore into the role of James Bond. Not been following Saintly news lately, I'm afraid!

On the contrary (as I often seem to be here on AJB!) I think there's much that could still be done with the film version of the LALD novel. It is indeed the Bond novel that keeps on giving - we're now onto our fourth film version potentially ifd the rumours are indeed true (and I really hope that they are).

I love the idea of a gritty remake.
I loved the book LALD. I just talked my little bro into picking up a copy to read last week (wouldn't lend him by Signet copy). I told him it was one of the better adventures. I read it about fifteen years ago, but remember most the atmosphere. A great pace of investigating the clues while moving around locations.
I loved the fact that FOR YOUR EYES ONLY incorporated the Keel Hauling scene from the novel.
I doubt though that remakes are in the future of 007.
I would like to see SPECTRE return though.
I am stoked about Idris being in a Bond flic. That is so awesome. I hope it happens.
I don't think I can really wait until 2016!!! I know I'm at the mercy of EON productions,,,, but I think I'll add my concerns to my nightly prayers.

If we have to wait until 2016 for another James Bond movie I would rather they get rid of Daniel Craig and find a new actor. This waiting 3 to 4 years for a James Bond movie is ridiculous. I'm getting to the point where I just don't care anymore about Daniel Craig and James Bond.
I'm looking forward to Star Trek which will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2016 and a new Star Wars movie being released every year from 2015 - 2020.
Pierce Brosnan is returning as a spy in "November Man" for 2014. That will be fun to watch.
If Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli don't want to keep up the momentum and bring out a James Bond movie in 2014, then to hell with them. I look forward to the next generation of Wilsons taking over.
In the meantime, I will watch Adam Rayner as the new "Saint".

Here is the way I see it. Since Daniel Craig and his wife are doing a stage production from October 2013 to February 2014 in New York, it doesn't seem their will be any time for pre-production stuff in late 2013. They probably want to give John Logan more than a year to write the screenplay.
I'm just guessing, but I wonder if they are waiting for Sam Mendes to be done with his stage productions in 2013-14 and then coax him back into doing Bond 24.
It looks like we might have to wait until 2015 for an actual release of the next movie. The producers don't seem to be in any hurry this time like they were with Quantum of Solace (2008). Back then they were trying to get the screenplay in by November 2007.

Sam Mendes recently turned down the offer to direct Bond 24. In a Guardian interview he basically said that Skyfall involved three years hard work, and the idea of going through it all again with basically the same set of characters and scenarios made him physicall ill. Perhaps, in a year or so he could be coaxed into changing his mind, but do not count on it happening.

I do not want Sam Mendes back. I do not know why people feel the franchise will suffer he doesn't return, I say good riddance. I say get a director who can make a REAL Bond movie, instead a heap of rubbish.

What is a "real" James Bond. I see this term thrown around a lot and I think it means "I didn't like it, but I can't explain why."
I didn't (and don't) like the Roger Moore films (and I can explain why). But they're still James Bond films.
A James Bond film is one that features a main character named James Bond.
I'm just resubmitting my thoughts on this from an older post:
Updating it would be tricky, but if it was updated the way CR was it could work.
Big could no longer be a SMERSH agent with his operation being a Soviet
Fifth Column type affair. He would have to be affiliated with terrorists or perhaps the new Quantum group. The whole voodoo reference would also have to be changed as it no longer creates the fear it did at the time in the US. It probably still does to some extent in some small tribal communities in Haiti and Africa, but it would really be difficult to modernize its effect in today's American culture, where its used more to make money off of tourists than anything (the way palm readers and psychics do). Even the zombie thing was turned from its origins into fodder for horror films. Most of the scenes from the novel could still be done. Bond could still be put up in the same NY hotel since it's still there. The Harlem scene has totally changed since then, so I don't think having Mr. Big and the night club Bond and Leiter visit there would work now. It would have to be set in another area (perhaps an exclusive resort owned by Mr. Big somewhere in the Hamptons). It would also make more sense if Mr. Big's henchman and people in his organization were a mix of ethnic groups as opposed to only blacks - not to mention be more realistic. It is
still tricky today to have a film where the villain is black and the hero is white, even if one is British and the other from another country. However, having blacks represented in the story as an equal part of the law enforcing effort to
get Big (such as the FBI or NY detective contact being black) helps balance the negative that Big symbolizes. It would have to be shown that whatever his scheme is would be just as much a threat to blacks as to anyone else - for example he was using organization not only to smuggle drugs and guns internationally but to also obtain some hi tech military device, bio weapon or nuclear material or even getting hold of a nuclear warhead for a terrorist group or an African warlord. He could still be from Haiti, and even have his history of having had stolen money or goods that was supposed to go to Haitian disaster relief. Perhaps he could be using the Jamaican gangs similar to the Yardies or Shower Posse (or even try to be organizing them into one gang under him) to help succeed in his efforts. Bond could still go to Florida and then to Mr. Big's private island. It could be done...I just don't think it ever will be (at least in
my lifetime). I can't see the producers wanting to remake any of the films in even the distant future, but I suppose anything can happen.
