I think he wanted David Niven or Cary Grant.

I read somewhere that he offered lots of suggestions on who could play Bond in the films, possibly with an eye on who would make the movie successful vs. who would play the the character closest to how he envisioned it. Personally I think Cary Grant would have been an interesting Bond.

Off the top of my head and without checking (ie, I could be wrong!)...I seem that in addition to David Niven and Cary Grant who he most certainly did mention I believe the name of Dirk Bogarde also came up.

Depending on which articles I have read, Ian Fleming wanted Cary Grant, David Niven, Richard Burton, Richard Todd. It appears he wanted a star name, which probably explains (in part at least) why he wasn't so keen on Sean Connery to begin with. I am sure others here have better knowledge on this than I do.

Every actor ever linked with Fleming was always a proper, distinguished English gentleman (apologies to Burton!). Fleming not only wanted a well known actor, but someone with breeding and class as Bond - at least outwardly - was most certainly an English gentleman. His initial distaste for Connery is well known and I believe was for a number of reasons: Connery was basically unknown, was not distinguished, was tattooed and had a heavy Scottish accent. He did have the right appearance and eventually won over Fleming quite thoroughly.
