A question to our state side Bondites,
guys, being an ex U.K police officer,im puzzled to how your
system works,(1) scenario,
im enjoying my grand slam breakfast i Dennys on International drive
in Orlando Florida,i notice 2 F.H.P officers having coffee in a back booth
suddenly a robber goes to the cash desk and pulls out a gun the 2 F.H.P.
officers deal with him,
now my question is who deals with the mop up,is it
(1) F.H.P.
(2) Florida state police
(3) Orange county sheriffs dept
(4) Orlando P.D.

Im confussed as you see all 4 agencies, driving around
and i would like to know who does what
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

I think the assault on the 2 F.H.P. officers would be a state crime, as opposed to a local crime to be handled by the Orlando P.D. or a county crime, which I believe is within the jurisdiction of the county sheriff's department. My guess is that the Florida state police would take the lead (that's merely a guess, though).

Hmmmmm, I'm trying to picture this scenario happening in my town (San Mateo, CA.)

The way it works around here is

California Highway Patrol takes care of the Highway. They also help out local police sometimes.
The Sheriffs department takes care of unincorporated sections of the county. They also help out at the County Courthouse and sit in the courtrooms and are basically guarding the courtrooms during pre-trials, jury selection and trials. They can be considered County Police Officers
City Police take care of the city.
I've never seen a State Trooper in my area. Not even sure if California has State Troopers.

If something happened in my area, like what happened to you I'm sure the City police would take the lead, and highway patrol would assist since two of their guys were involved. When something like that happens all agencies assist each other. If it happened in an Unincorporated part of the County, the Sheriff would most likely take the lead with assistance from the city police of which the unincorporated area lies (i.e robbery happens in unincorporated San Mateo. Sheriff does clean up, San Mateo Police assist.

If your wonder what an Unincorporated area is, I shamelessly lifted this from wikipedia:

In law, an unincorporated area is a region of land that is not governed by its own local municipal corporation which is instead administered as part of larger administrative divisions, such as a township, parish, borough, county, canton, state, province or country. Occasionally municipalities dissolve or disincorporate, which may happen if they become fiscally insolvent, and services become the responsibility of a higher administration (for example, Cabazon, California disincorporated in 1972). In some countries there are no unincorporated areas as all parts of the country are incorporated, such as in France or Brazil.

    Hope that helped

thanks agent Martini,i only have a picture of what goes on from watching
US cop shows ect,and there always seems to be lots of cops arguing with each other
as who is in charge of what,Over here we only have one force per county
ie Kent police, Essex police, Suffolk, police, you get the idea,we do not have seperate
town/city forces any more apart from the MET,City of London Police, and Greater Manchester police
but thanks for the reply ,appreciate your time

I have a feeling you might be watching scripted police shows. That's done for Drama. I suggest watching a show like Cops. That's a camera man riding along with an officer (different cities each week). I'm sure there's other unscripted cop shows to, but Cops should give you a good idea of how our law enforcement works.

There is indeed a plethora of law enforcement agencies operating in and around the District of Columbia - the local D.C police, the National Park Police (because of the various monuments and national parks), the F.B.I., the Secret Service Police (as distinguished from the Secret Service), and probably several more that I can't even name. Add to that the fact that the city of Washington ,D.C. is significantly impacted by the surrounding suburbs located in Maryland and Virginia, and that gives you several more state, county and local police agencies to take into consideration. It's extremely difficult to know which law enforcement agency is in charge of what around here!

I was always confused by the 2-3 seemingly different police forces in Live and Let Die.
JW Pepper is Sherrif but then there are other officers in different cars and uniforms. Can anyone explain this for me please?

Also...is the officer who takes charge of the road block under the bridge the same actor who plays the police man who chases 007 in Vegas in DAF??? Always wondered!

County sheriffs trump everyone in Missouri. A crime that occurs inside a city limits will fall under the local police, but if it's a big deal the county sheriff will be involved...the Highway Patrol has to be invited in for the most part. An assault on any police officer in our state will be prosecuted by the state.
We do not have a State Police, our neighbor to the South, Arkansas, has state police and highway patrol. It's confusing.

I did a little research and found out that California had State Troopers until the mid to late 1980s. The State Police was merged with the Highway Patrol and the State Police was dissolved.

On question 2, yes it is! I think he was a real policeman, too, not strictly an actor! :)
