Favorite John Wayne movies ?

When I'm not watching James Bond movies there's a good chance I am enjoying a John Wayne movie.

Here is my top 10....what are some of your favorites?

1. Fort Apache (1948) - Quite simply the finest American film ever made. Wayne in a supporting role.

2. Stagecoach (1939) - The definitive classic western. Wayne becomes a superstar.

3. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)- The last great collaboration between John Ford and John Wayne.

4. Red River (1948) - Epic cattle drive. Wayne at his absolute best.

5. Rio Bravo (1959)- Howard Hawks' answer to High Noon. Template for future zombie films.

6. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) - Gorgeous color cinematography of Monument Valley.

7. The Big Trail (1930) - The first 70mm widescreen epic! The sheer scope of this film is astounding.

8. The Quiet Man (1952) - Be sure to get the new restored Blu-Ray version!!!

9. In Harm's Way (1965) - Great WWII Navy drama with Wayne and Kirk Douglas.

10. The Searchers (1956) - Wayne's most hard-edged performance. Stunning views of Monument Valley. Unfortunately, let down by goofy comic relief and daft characters. Kind of like TMWTGG. 8-)

Towards the end of his life he did "modern" roles in projects like "McQ" which was a Dirty Harry-type plot

In one scene McQ (Wayne) gives a woman heroin in exchange for information

I wonder what the old straight-arrow Duke thought about that?
    I must be dreaming

He wasn't the greatest actor but John Wayne had a great screen presence. I really enjoy many of his films. The Searchers being my favourite, a true epic in which Wayne gives his best performance. Other favourite's include Red River, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, El Dorado, True Grit.

I once camped in the village Cong in Co. Mayo where The Quiet Man was filmed - saw the little white cottage and everything. Never seen the film, though. Not a John Wayne or Western fan, really. 8-)

Rio Bravo, Alamo, The Big Red One and Hatari. The Green Berets gets an Honorable Mention because Waynes character is based on a genuine Finnish Bad Ass Lauri Törni, aka Larry Thorne.

edit: The Big Red One did not have John Wayne on it but the greatest actor of all time: Lee Marvin, whose best movies would be The Dirty Dozen, The Big Red One and The Iron Cross.

Edit edit: It's not The Iron Cross it's The Cross of Iron and it's not Lee Marvin it's James Coburn... I truly am having an off day!

I do like his last one, The Shootist, and his byplay with Lauren Becall. I haven't seen too many of his others.

Hatari! - A terrific family adventure. I'm rather interested in African wildlife, so this movie is right up my alley. :D The score (including "The Baby Elephant Walk") by Henry Mancini is great too.

I also like Red River quite a lot.
